“I hope he didn’t know, I like him,” I said.
“He was a good man to have at our backs in Ireland.”
“He was.”
“If you hurt Anita, I may be compromised,” Rodina said, “because to cause her pain literally causes all her Brides pain.”
“Is Nicky well enough to survive it?” I asked.
“Once they got the tree out of his side he started healing the damage,” Edward said.
It must have shone on my face because he added, “He’s going to be fine, but I can call the hospital and have him sedated while we cleanse your wound.”
“Yes, please.”
Rodina said, “I’d say sedate me, too, but I want to be here to save Rodrigo if possible.”
“He betrayed me a second time, Rodina.”
“Deimos is the first vampire to roll you like a human in how long?” she asked.
“Almost ten years, I think.”
“He was standing there when Roddy rose from the grave for the first time. Some master vampires can feel when a lesser vamp is about to come out, and they’ll wait for them like a collector. Anything powerful enough to do that means the new vampire has no choice but to follow the master vampire waiting for them. Roddy had hoped for a new evil ruler to follow, but…you saw it last night: Deimos is too unstable to be king. Rodrigo and I want an evil ruler to follow that will let us indulge ourselves, but first they need to be a strong leader. We hoped it was him, but powerful isn’t the same as strong of will.”
“Do you want Rodrigo to be on the save-if-possible list?” Edward asked.
“Maybe, I mean if he rolled me then maybe Rodrigo had no choice either.”
“I thought he was a bad guy when you met him?” Edward said.
“He was, but he also reached out to me in dreams and helped me while Richard, Ru, and I were captured.”
“We will do what we can, but if he attacks us as a vampire then we will have no choice,” Olaf said.
“That’s fair,” I said.
“Are you willing for Kane to die even if it kills Asher?” Edward asked.
“Richard will tell Jean-Claude and Asher what Kane’s done.”
“Are you willing to pull the trigger on Kane?” Edward asked.
“I won’t go out of my way to kill him today, but I won’t risk anyone else’s life to keep Kane alive either.”
“Okay,” Edward said.
“But first we put Rodina in the back of a police car, and you cleanse the bite.”
“Let me stay and try to save Roddy.”
“You betrayed me before your brother introduced you to Deimos. I can’t trust you, so you go in the back of a patrol car until I decide what to do with you.” She tried to argue, but in the end we had her walked down to the police cars to wait.
When we were alone in our little corner of the parking lot with a small stand of trees beside us and the warehouse, Edward said, “It will take Olaf and me both to cleanse your wound.”
“It was just you last time,” I said.
“Last time was Nikolaos, she was only a thousand years old. You couldn’t hear her in your head in broad daylight. I’ve never seen any vampire control you like this one.”
