“Well, Jean-Claude is mine, but I would still be able to tell someone if he was a traitor.”

“You and Jean-Claude are more a partnership like Fortune and Echo; Queenie has never treated Kaazim as her partner.”

“They don’t like each other much,” I said.

“He hates her, and she considers him less than…” Ru seemed to search for a word and then just said, “She considers him less than.”

I wanted to trust Kaazim because I did trust him.

Ethan spoke mind-to-mind.If Kaazim and Queenie are both traitors we need to get you away from both of them.

I’d seen Kaazim in knife practice; he was amazing with a blade, but he was equally good with a handgun. Long gun was his weakest weapon skill, but that was like saying a Formula 500 driver wasn’t quite as good driving his everyday car. Hand-to-hand he was wicked fast, and the only thing that kept him from damaging his training partners was that training wasn’t supposed to hurt that much.

“I really like having him on our side,” I said.

“The alternative would be bad,” Ethan said.

“This is ridiculous, he’s our friend. He’s been on more missions out of country with Bobby Lee and the wererats than any of the Harlequin.”

“We are the best spies that have ever lived, Anita,” Ru said.

“So everyone keeps telling me.”

“It means that we are the best professional liars that have ever lived,” Ru said.

Truth said, “If there are traitors in our midst, we must take Anita back to the Circus now.”

“Take her now, do not delay,” Wicked said.

“I can’t leave you like this,” I said.

“You can and you will,” Truth said.

“We can take more of the doctor’s medicine and sleep pain free until you can come and heal us,” Wicked said. It was the longest sentence he’d said since he hurt his face.

“If there are traitors among the Harlequin, then we can’t leave you here unconscious and helpless,” I said.

“She’s right,” Nicky said.

“Then let’s get them some clothes and get the hell out of here,” I said.

“Kaazim will want to ride back with us,” Ethan said.

“Shit, you’re right,” I said.

“Can’t Anita just order him to stay here?” Ru asked.

We looked at him.

“She’s our queen now, her word is law.”

“He’ll ask why I’m changing Jake’s orders,” I said.

“A queen doesn’t have to explain herself,” Ru said, “that’s part of what it means to be queen.”

“Would we rather keep an eye on him?” I asked.

“No,” Truth said, “if he is a traitor then farther away from you is where we want him.”
