Rowan was shocked when he heard that. Although he knew that there were other witches, he also knew that they were quite difficult to find and there were not as many as there once were.

“You were able to find another witch?” he asked her, the shock still evident in his voice. “They are quite rare.”

She nodded. “Yes, I know. I was lucky enough to have bumped into one in the human world. She had different powers from mine but she was able to help me briefly before she disappeared. I never could find her after that, no matter how hard I tried.”

“Well, I’m glad that there was somebody out there to help you,” he said. “You must have needed someone to take care of you.”

Instead of the comfort that he had thought she would draw from his words, they seemed to have the opposite effect on her.

“What exactly do you mean by that? What would you care if somebody else took care of me?Youcertainly didn’t do it,” she said, her voice rising an octave as she glared at him angrily.

Rowan stared at her with wide eyes, completely taken aback by her reaction, although he supposed he should have seen it coming.

“Juniper…” He paused, unable to continue with the words he wanted to say. Her name on his lips felt so loaded, so heavy on his tongue. What was he to say that would make everything better again?

She was right. He had offered her vague promises over and over and when the time came for him to fulfill his promises, he had tucked tail in fear.

He placed his hand on her thigh and froze as she watched him, just as frozen as he was, and they looked at each other. The feeling that he had felt before—that feeling of love, warmth, and comfort, the content feeling of being with his mate—was going haywire in his chest inside of him just because he was touching her again.

‘Calm down, Hanlon. We need to give her time to adjust to us once again or we will lose her. You don’t want her to run away, do you?’

Hanlon whined inside of him at the thought of her running away from them. Rowan ignored him and turned to Juniper again. However, before he could say anything—not that he knew exactly what it was he needed to say—the car rolled to a stop.

Rowan cussed in his mind when he realized that they had arrived at the inn. The journey suddenly seemed shorter than he had remembered it to be.

Before he could find a way to stall, Juniper looked outside the window and saw that they had arrived. She looked back at him and moved her thigh from underneath his palm.

“I am going up. We can talk tomorrow about what we need to do concerning my visions. I’m very tired.” She got out of the car and turned to him.

“Goodnight, Rowan,” she said, and slammed the door quietly.

Rowan followed her with his eyes as she walked to her door. He was torn between going home and following her up into her room. However, he didn’t want to take the risk that she would be too angry that he’d disregarded her statement about how tired she was and still chose to follow her.

It was also risky. He used to sneak around whenever he wanted to be with her before. They purposely met in the woods where they were unlikely to be seen. The inn was a bit too central. Any pack member passing by would easily recognize that he was parked outside and the rumors would soon spread that he was with her.

‘What are you doing? Are you just going to let her go?’ Hanlon asked him, growling.

‘What do you want me to do? She said goodnight,’ he growled back.

‘Go after her,’ Hanlon said.

‘I don’t think it’s a good idea, Hanlon,’ he said, trying to get his wolf to see reason.

‘GO AFTER HER. NOW!’ Hanlon yelled at him, clearly agitated by his refusal.

Rowan kept trying to explain why it was not a good idea but his wolf simply repeated the same line over and over until he finally gave in. Rowan had not been too torn up by his wolf’s demand because, just like Hanlon, he had wanted to go up to her as well.

He hurriedly got down from the vehicle and hurried after her. He reached her just as she put her key in the door.

“I don’t want to leave you alone tonight,” he said, looking down into her eyes.

Chapter 5 - Juniper

Juniper looked up at Rowan with wide eyes. She should not have been drinking. That blasted Twin Moon brew was nothing like the alcohol of the humans and she had forgotten that. Of course, she had done so to help her be able to go to sleep, but it had been a bad idea as soon as Rowan was there. She was unable to resist thinking about how much she wanted him already, so drinking as she had done had only ended up making her more vulnerable to her emotions.

When he told her that he didn’t want to leave her alone, she allowed her emotions to lead.

She wanted to be with him too. She had been a stickler for rules when it came to him, for so long, and she was tired of it, even if she had made the rules herself.
