Rowan was the best thing that had ever happened to her. For the first time in her life, she had felt accepted. That was over now. There was no going back to it. In one day, her entire life had been shattered.

She should have left Starlight Valley on her eighteenth birthday, as she had planned. She should have never been foolish enough to stay over a stupid infatuation. She was a fool to think that anything the alpha had told her was true.

Juniper ran down the road leading out of town, with nothing but the tattered clothes on her back, and a heart full of broken dreams. She had no idea where she was running to, but that was alright. She would figure it out.

What she knew was that she was never going to return to Moonwood or the Valley for that matter. She vowed it to herself and took comfort in the vow as her tired legs beat the hard ground.

Chapter 1 - Juniper

The bus meandered down the lonely road and Juniper watched the trees through the windows from her side of the bus. She couldn’t help the memories that came over her.

It had been a long time since she was last in Starlight Valley, but now she was back, unfortunately for reasons that were way beyond her.

Try as she might to forget, the memory of this place had always stuck with her, and not much had changed around here.

Right as she was thinking this, another vision came upon her. Her head shot backward from the abruptness and force of it, and it was all she could do to quickly grab her sleep mask before the vision overtook her.

She barely had enough time to pick up the sleep mask from her lap and place it over her eyes with shaky hands, silently regretting that she hadn’t kept it around her neck.

Quickly, she laid her head back and pretended to sleep before the vision started. Her hands tightened over the arms of the chair and she squeezed with all her might just as it began.

Her vision was the same as it had been for the past few weeks. Always the same vision, never changing, and still she hadn’t been able to get used to it or find a way to not react so strongly.

In her vision, she was back home in the Moonwood clan, standing facing the forest. She turned around and there he was—Rowan Zev, the powerful alpha of the Moonwood pack and her mate who had rejected her.

He took a step toward her. His tall, gorgeous frame was lit just perfectly by the sunlight, his short black hair was blowing around in the wind, framing his face, and his golden eyes shone brighter than she had ever seen them, staring fixedly at her with an intensity that had her knees buckling and almost sinking to the ground.

Her eyes ran over the length of his gorgeous body and she bit her lip at the sight of the muscles rippling in his frame with his every move.

Even though the real Juniper, given their history together, wanted to take a step back, in her vision she never did that. Instead, she stood there, watching and waiting as he approached until he was standing before her.

He reached out his hands and ran the back of his palm down the side of her face in light, gentle strokes that caused her lids to flutter and her lips to part in a quiet gasp.

She watched in confusion as his mouth opened and he began to speak, but she could not hear him as no words came out. Instead, she focused her eyes on his lips and tried to make out the words.

Juniper, I have always wanted to…

As she read his lips, taking note of his every word, she waited impatiently for him to complete his sentence, terribly curious about what he had always wanted to do.

However, Juniper was frustrated because as always, she didn’t get to know what his next words were going to be. His words were cut off by an explosion that was so powerful it knocked them apart, putting a distance between them.

Juniper winced in pain as she put her hands to her ears to try to stop the ringing caused by the explosion. She squinted through blurry vision and looked up to try to make out what was going on.

Her eyes widened in panic at the destruction all around her. Moonwood was on fire and she could hear the screams and agony of its people. She watched helplessly as the faint shadows of people stumbled about in the smoke before they dropped to the ground.

A deep feeling of fear overtook her, freezing her to the bone just as she heard ominous laughter from all around her.

Her vision ended just as someone touched her shoulder and she was jolted back to reality with so much force that she fell forward, slamming her head against the headrest of the seat in front of her.

Juniper held her head, wincing in pain at the stinging sensation from her embarrassing ordeal. This was what had been going on ever since her visions started. The visions always happened in the same way, taking such a violent hold on her. Even now that she had learned how to control her power, it still affected her like this.

It had always been extremely annoying and so much of an inconvenience to hide it while she still lived among the humans.

“What is wrong with you? What are you doing?” an angry voice asked from the seat in front of her.

“I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to do that,” Juniper said, completely out of it as she remained plagued by her vision.

“Are you okay? It seems like you hit your head pretty bad,” the voice said, now completely calm.
