Juniper looked up to see an old man who appeared to be in his fifties staring at her with concern as he studied the hand that was still placed on her head and the look on her face.

“Yes, I did. I sleep like that sometimes and I’m not always able to control myself,” she responded.

“Oh, I see. Do you sleepwalk?” he asked her. The concern in his eyes had deepened to pity.

“Yes, I do,” Juniper responded. She felt terrible for having to lie to the kind old man, but it was better than telling him the truth. She doubted he would believe the truth even if she did.

“I had a brother who used to sleepwalk. We had to chain him down whenever he did because he kept trying to leave the house.” He smiled a fond but weary smile that caused her to chuckle.

The bus rolled to a stop at that moment and Juniper lost her smile as she looked to the side where the town sign was located. She turned back to the man, fixing a smile on her face.

“Thank you for being so gracious about it and I’m sorry again for disturbing you,” she apologized sincerely.

“It’s alright.” He looked at the sign and back at her. “You be careful now. I see you’re going to Moonwood. There are a lot of strange things happening in that town.”

“Thank you,” she said, smiling at him. She picked up her things and walked off the bus. She stood at the bus stop beside the sign and watched the bus ride off.

Looking up at the sign, she murmured to herself, “Well, he wasn’t wrong. There are a lot of strange things that happen in Moonwood and the other towns in Starlight Valley.”

Moonwood and the surrounding towns were all herded by a group of alpha friends, who had come to be known as the Knights in the Sky. There were seven stars in that sky, but Juniper only knew one of them and that was Rowan Zev, the alpha of the pack of Moonwood, her mate.

At least, that was what he had told her.

Juniper had no mate pull since she was a witch and not a werewolf like the rest of them. All she knew was that she had fallen in love with him and had done so foolishly, seeing as how he had wasted no time in rejecting her and breaking her heart.

She tossed her travel duffel bag over her shoulder apprehensively as she began to walk into town. She looked around, filled with a deep sense of nostalgia and familiarity. It truly had been a long time since she’d last been here.

Juniper had never wanted to return and she had vowed that she wouldn’t on that eventful day seven years ago. She would have kept it that way had it been her choice, but now she had no choice but to return to the place of her torment.

Her visions had started a month ago.

At first, it hadn’t been so serious, and even though she had frowned at the sudden and constant memories of Rowan and Moonwood, she’d been able to ignore it.

However, she was soon to find out that the longer she ignored her visions, the more painful they became for her to ignore until she could no longer do so.

Juniper had put off returning to Moonwood for a month, but her visions had become so serious, plaguing her daily. Then by the end of the first week, they had begun to come multiple times in a day, to the point where they disturbed her daily life.

Juniper had been annoyed to realize that the carefully curated life she had made for herself in the human world was soon to come to an end.

Since she was a witch, she had been able to pass as a human without anyone being able to tell the difference.

Her hair and eyes were pitch-black, and her skin was just a bit too pale for someone with her hair color and eye color. She often got strange looks from people, but her coloring had not been enough for anyone to suspect her to be more than what she looked on the outside.

Luckily, Juniper had encountered humans who had loved her strange look, and even chose the same look as a cosmetic choice. A lot of them assumed that she was a redhead who happened to be goth and loved dark clothes and makeup, dying her hair and wearing contacts.

Soon Juniper had embraced her human identity as a goth. It kept her safe and free of their questions.

As a result of this, it had been easy to go about with her life. Even on the days when her hair was purple as a result of her power, people just thought that she was experimenting with hair dye. The human world often presented her with the excuses she needed for her appearance, and as such she had found it easy to blend into their world.

There were no triggers that would force her to use her powers or show that she was different from everyone else like the vampires and the shifters. Juniper was basically human, if not for her powers.

As a result of her human appearance, she had been able to get a job as a bartender in an upscale rock club. She had her own legal apartment and she was doing perfectly fine. She even had enough money saved up from both her job and the séances she often did for humans.

To them, it was all plain, harmless fun, but she actually did do the séances. During the séances, she would have visions and tell people what it was they wanted. Her eyes, which turned purple when she used her powers, were always hidden behind eye patches, even though her customers thought it was part of her gimmick.

They had often left after the séance giggling and joking among themselves. Then when the things she had told them came to pass, they often returned to her, their eyes filled with awe.

The problem with ignoring her visions, save for the fact that they were so strong and violent, was the danger that often came with them.
