Rowan was walking toward his mate’s house on the outskirts of town, close to the forest. His wolf was going wild inside of him at the opportunity to finally be close to her and so was he, but he was also incredibly anxious as well.

He found her just outside where she was taking in firewood to the little hut where she stayed. The hut was considered to be her own space. As he watched her from behind the bushes where he hid, he could see that she did not look happy. Just like at the ceremony, she looked like she would rather be far away.

Rowan could feel the restlessness of his wolf as he struggled to reach out to her. His wolf mourned on the inside.

‘PROTECT HER. COMFORT HER,’ Hanlon was screaming, making Rowan grimace.

‘Shut up! I thought we agreed that we were going to take things slow?’ he queried his wolf. Rowan shut his eyes and tried to contain his wolf despite Hanlon’s obvious angst.

Just as he was trying to get his wolf to relax, Rowan stepped on a twig. He grimaced and his eyes closed as the twig broke, its sound carrying loudly in the quiet environment.

“Who is that? What’s there?” she questioned in a shaky voice. Rowan opened his eyes to see that she was staring in his direction, but she wouldn’t be able to see him through the thick bushes. Her eyes showed her fear and Rowan was sorry to be the one to put it there.

Her eyes darted between the forest where the noise had come from and the house where her adopted family was, as if she was trying to see if she could make it before whatever was in the forest could get to her.

Rowan felt even more guilty now. He should have known that hiding behind the bushes wasn’t a good idea, and he should have gone to her directly like his wolf wanted instead of hiding behind the bushes like a scared child.

Before things could get any more out of hand, he sighed and stood up straight before stepping out from behind the trees where he stood.

Her eyes widened in shock and fear when she saw who it was that had scared her, and she immediately looked down, bowing low as she greeted him.

“Alpha Rowan, I am very sorry. I did not realize it was you. Please forgive me for my insolence,” she said. Her voice was still shaky, only now it was in fear of him.

Rowan cocked his head to the side as he regarded her curiously. Did people her age talk like that?

“You don’t have to be so formal. You can relax.”

She raised her head and looked at him through long, dark lashes, showing her completely black eyes. Rowan was baffled by how beautiful she looked despite the blackness of her eyes. He struggled to take his eyes off her.

His wolf moved excitedly inside of him, happy that she was once again looking at them. All he wanted was to keep her attention focused on them.

‘I TOLD YOU TO RELAX,’ Rowan chastised his wolf when he continued to move excitedly, while he offered Juniper a small smile.

“Not that I’m suggesting that you don’t have the right to go anywhere you please in the pack, but what are you doing here?” she asked him in a small voice.

He could tell that she was being careful not to annoy him and he made a mental note to not do anything that would spook her.

“Oh, well I was just around, and I saw you…”

‘Lies. TELL HER. TELL HER,’ his wolf screamed inside.

Rowan grimaced, wishing there was a way he could shut his wolf from this conversation, but he knew he would never do something like that. The wolves inside of them were animals after all… they acted upon their basic impulses. Hanlon didn’t care what people would think if he was mated with a witch instead of a wolf. All he wanted was to have his mate with him and make her happy.

“Oh, I saw you looking at me during the ceremony. Was I doing anything wrong?” she asked him as her eyes filled with fear once again.

Rowan quickly shook his head and stepped forward until he was standing even closer to her.

“No, you were doing everything right.”

She looked at his face, her eyes filled with confusion at his words.

“What do you mean? I was dressed up the least among everyone present.”

Rowan moved even closer to her until he could smell her. His wolf began to go crazy, but for once Hanlon did not interrupt him.

“That didn’t matter because you were the most beautiful person there,” he said, barely containing his grin at the sight of her very pale skin turning red from her blush.

He could see that beyond her blush, she was also taken aback by his words. She had obviously not expected those words to flow from his lips in regards to her. He was sure that she had never thought he would ever speak to her, and if he was being honest, he probably wouldn’t have if not for the fact that she was his mate.
