She nodded, feeling too sick to speak. Her job was everything to her, she couldn’t lose it. It was the only thing she had. And what about the proposal? Was Noah serious or…?

“Hey.” He reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her from her thoughts. “Sophie. Talk to me.”

“I uhm. I—” She didn’t have the words to describe what she was feeling. “You’re my boss.”

He looked slightly offended by her words. “Do you want me to go?”

“No.” And she didn’t. “I just don’t know what to say.”

“Then don’t say anything. Tonight was amazing. Let’s just sleep, okay?” he suggested.

Sophie squeezed his hand. “Okay,” she agreed.

Noah was right. Tonight had been amazing and maybe she could leave it at that for now.

They could do damage control in the morning.

CHAPTER7

NOAH

Noah set the plates filled with food onto Sophie’s glass dining room table. He turned the kettle on just as she stepped out of her bedroom.

“What’s this?” she asked.

He shrugged. “It’s the least I could do for last night.”

Sophie laughed. “Are you thanking me for sex?”

Noah laughed nervously in realization. “I guess I am. Coffee?”

“Please,” she said, grabbing two mugs from the cupboard. She took over, telling him to sit, and poured them each a mug. She looked nervous.

“I hope you don’t mind,” he started.

“No. No, it’s okay. Thank you.”

They ate slowly and quietly.

Noah had never overstayed his welcome at a woman’s house before, nor had he wanted to. It always felt too intimate. But with Sophie, it felt different. Normal.

Her light brown hair was loose and she wore an oversized black T-shirt. She sipped her coffee, showing off her finely manicured hands. She tapped them along the mug, her eyes withdrawn in thought. Her lower lids were slightly smeared with kohl, the remains of last night’s makeup.

Noah replayed last night in his head over and over again — not just the sex, but their discussion. He knew it was crazy to ask her to marry him but it felt too perfect. She was everything he was looking for.

He didn’t love her but he knew he didn’t hate being in her presence. And as long as they agreed not to catch feelings and remain platonic, what could go wrong?

“Sophie, about last night…” Noah trailed off just as she looked up at him.

“Let’s do it,” she blurted.

He was shocked. Was she agreeing to what he thought she was agreeing to?

“Are you sure?” Did she truly understand that they could never be a normal husband and wife? Would she really be willing to give up love to have a child?

She nodded. “I mean, we should probably talk about it some more… but yeah, I think so.”

Had it truly been that easy for him? Noah was overcome with relief… and fear.
