Sophie often dressed formally for work and was comfortable in heels and a dress, but tonight she felt different. Confident and sexy. Something she hadn’t felt in a long time.

They’d agreed to meet at the front entrance and she could already see a man standing there as she approached. Relief washed over her as she neared: not only did Matt look like his photos, he exceeded them.

His eyebrows raised as she approached. “Sophie?”

“Matt? Hi, yes, that’s me.” Out of habit she reached for a handshake.

He didn’t seem to mind and took her hand with gentle ease, looking her up and down. “Wow. That dress is beautiful.”

“Thank you,” she smiled, hoping he didn’t sense her anxiety. She clasped her hands in front of her, not sure where to put them.

Matt approached the door and opened it, gesturing for her to go ahead. “You want to go in?”

“Sure.” Sophie placed her hand on the door so he could let go as she entered.

She had never been to the place before, though she had heard good reviews. The inside was lavishly decorated, with gold, red, and black accents.

Matt gave his name for the reservation and in a few moments they were seated in front of each other and a bottle of expensive wine was being poured.

Matt signaled to the bottle. “Just leave it.”

The waitress did and Sophie shifted in her seat; she had never really been a fan of red wine. She didn’t bother mentioning that she preferred white, though, as it was already poured.

They filled the silence by reading the menu.

“So, you mentioned that you work in fashion, right?” Matt asked.

Over the last couple days they had shared a few vague things about themselves and Sophie was put off by the fact that he had forgotten so quickly. Or perhaps he was talking to other people? She supposed most single people did.

“I run the marketing department at Birch Industries, actually. We sell a leading brand of car seats.”

“Like for kids?”

“Yeah,” Sophie confirmed with a smile.

Matt’s face twitched ever so slightly at her response. The waitress returned to take their order, preventing Sophie from questioning his apprehensive look.

“I’ll get the steak and potatoes,” Matt told the waitress, his eyes wandering over her slim figure.

Sophie tried to act as though she hadn’t seen it and handed the menus back. “I think I’ll get the same. Thank you.”

The waitress smiled, looking back at Matt. “Great. Anything else I can grab for you? Maybe an appetizer?”

The two shared a look. “That will be all, honey. Thanks.”

The waitress glanced at Sophie uncomfortably before leaving. Matt’s eyes lingered on her as she went. He didn’t seem to notice if Sophie cared; he swept his eyes over her in a sensual manner.

“So you work in finance, right?” she asked to confirm.

“Yeah, but I make most of my money from stock trading.” He leaned back in his seat, his legs in a wide stance.

“And do you enjoy it?” she asked.

The more he talked, the more Sophie wanted to bolt for the door.

By the time their food arrived, Matt had explained in excruciating detail the entire concept and operation of the stock market. Like she was a four-year-old.

“Are you sure you can eat all that?” he asked, staring at the equal amounts of food on their plates.
