Page 4 of Unexpected Fate

It’s past the end of the workday by the time the session is over. I’m exhausted, my eyes itch and I’m more than a little irritable, but I think we accomplished a lot today.

I presented both my law revision proposals today and, to my shock and delight, the one for consummated marriages was able to be pushed through immediately. In other cases we found, many couples chose not to have children and the omega was able to keep any property in the case of their alpha dying. Hopefully by this time next week, the law will be in effect and I can give Maximus the good news. The good thing about the new law is it will be retroactive—any cases in the works under this law will be immediately dismissed in the state of New York.

Even though I’d like nothing more than to go home and crawl into bed, I need to take a closer look at the documents Maximus gave me. Even though his alpha’s family will have no leg to stand on, I want to make sure there are no other provisions the law revision doesn’t cover.

Stepping off the elevator, I think the only good thing about working this late is I’ll have the office to myself. No Benjamin and his fantastic jasmine and citrus scent clouding my mind. I’ll be able to get work done without his very presence distracting me.

That’s what I think anyway, until I round the corner and see Benjamin sitting at his desk, fingers moving quickly across the keyboard, eyebrows knitted together.

“What are you doing here?” I ask in an angry voice. I’m already exhausted—having him around now will just be the cherry on top of the shit cake. He smells too good and is the right amount of sassy and smart.

I want him and that infuriates me.

Benjamin jumps, wide eyes locking on mine. Gods, he’s so fucking beautiful. I love how his curls look, framing his face almost like a halo. His brown skin is always unblemished and radiant, highlighting all of his features—wide brown eyes, soft, round cheeks, full, kissable lips. Fuck me, Benjamin is a vision.

And a pain in my ass because I can’t have him. I won’t allow myself to be hurt like that again.

His wide eyes narrow when he sees me. “If it’s not obvious that I’m working, I’ll start to question your intelligence,” he snarks, going back to his frantic typing.

“Why are you here?”

Slowly, he turns to look at me like I’m an idiot. “Last time I checked, I work here. Which is what I’m doing. Right now.” He gives me aduhlook, then goes back to typing.

Making a noise between a grunt and a growl, I march over to him and spin his chair around. “Why are you here this late? You’re not supposed to be here.” My voice is almost thunderous. It’s his fault that he’s so pretty and he smells like heaven and his ass in his slacks always makes me drool.

Fucking Benjamin. And I think about fucking Benjamin often.

Shoving back so he’s standing in my face, he says, “You sent me an email, telling me to compile the legal documents for omegas to fill out for transfer of ownership and tax refunds for the alphas that sponsored them. I was supposed to be at home two hours ago, but you”—he points at my chest—“said it was urgent and you needed it before I went home tonight.” He crosses his arms over his chest and glares at me.

Oh shit. I forgot about that. I sent off a quick email while we had our brief recess so we could get water and use the restroom. It’s not really that urgent. We don’t have another meeting about it for a few more weeks. Why did I tell him it was urgent?

“Well hurry up,” I growl, turning to walk to my office. “I need to see what you have.”

Before I shut my door, I swear I hear Benjamin say, “Frustrating alpha.”

Choosing to ignore his outburst, I pull Maximus’s documents from my pocket, then shuck my jacket, remove my tie, and roll up my shirt sleeves so I can settle in. The legalese in this document is deep and intense. I’ll be here for a while.

My eyes feel like they’re being rubbed by sandpaper every time I blink. The words are running together and I know I’m doing Maximus a disservice by working when I’m tired, but I want to get at least a brief overview of what I’m getting into.

A loud knock at my door startles me and I call out for him to enter. Rubbing my eyes, I glance up at Benjamin, who looks as exhausted as I feel. “Here. I’ll be putting in for overtime for this.” He tosses a file on my desk and puts his hands on his hips.

My head snaps back at his hard voice and I narrow my eyes. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. Over time.” He emphasizes the words, talking to me like I’m an idiot. “This is an abuse of power. You can’t keep me here just becauseyouare a workaholic. That’s what gave Mr. Matthews a heart attack. You’ll probably be right behind him.”

“The fuck I am,” I snarl, walking around the desk. “I know how to go home on time and I monitor my health”—though I’m not helping my case by still being at work when I’m so exhausted. “I’m working for the betterment of omegas, not frivolous bullshit.”

“Is that supposed to mean something? That you’re being a decent alpha? Bra-fucking-vo, Mr. Stewart. Here are your kudos. Let me kiss your ass since you’re obviously not getting the praise you need.”

I’m taken aback. While Benjamin has given me some pushback, it’s never been this bad.

I know I should deescalate this, but I’m tired and pissed.

Getting in his face, I growl, “I don’t need you to pat me on the back. I’m doing this becauseIwant to. I don’t give a fuck if I have your approval or not!”

“Thenwhytell me you’re working for omega rights? I know what you do! I make your fucking appointments!” His voice is shrill and he leans forward on his hips, getting in my face now.

Both of our chests are heaving and his eyes are blazing. Then they drop to my mouth, a look of longing and lust crossing his features before he can cover it. Without much thought—other than I’m tired of denying myself a taste of Benjamin—I wrap an arm around his waist, I pull him close to me and crash our lips together.
