We sit on the couch, talking and bonding while my pregnant omega sleeps. This is the life I never envisioned but I’m glad I have it now.

This is the life I wish my father had seen. I’ll just have to make sure I make him proud.

Chapter 20

Benji

Romesqueezesmyhandas we sit in my gynecologist’s office. This appointment was made during my heat to figure out why my heat was long as it was, even after having the surgery. Now, we’re here to confirm a pregnancy and try to get some answers.

We just had an ultrasound done and there was a little bean in there, with a strong steady heartbeat. I am not embarrassed to admit that I cried like a baby.

I got cleaned up and had more blood drawn, and now we are waiting for more test results. I’m not sure what the doctor is looking for and that makes me a little nervous. Rome must notice that because he hasn’t let my hand go since we sat down. I’m sure I’m cutting off circulation to his hand from how tight I’m gripping it, but he doesn’t seem to mind.

After about fifteen minutes, Dr. Stevens walks in, eyebrows furrowed and a frown on his face. My heart sinks, thinking that something is wrong, that something will harm the baby. I’m not sure what, but I’m not even supposed to be pregnant. There has to be something wrong with me.

Dr. Stevens sits down with a sigh, flipping up the papers in my medical file. “Mr. Hendrix.” He looks up at me and starts. My expression must not be as neutral as I thought it was. “Let me assure you. You are pregnant and you and the baby are fine.” I let out my pent-up breath, sagging in my seat. Rome pats my hand and smiles at me. I grab his hand with my other one, taking strength from his steady demeanor. “I’m sorry to have frightened you.”

Before I can tell him it’s okay, Rome asks, “What’s the problem? You don’t look like everything is okay.” I don’t miss the faint growl underlying Rome’s tone and I inwardly groan because Icannotpop a boner in my doctor’s office.

“I’m sorry,” the doc says, lacing his hands on his desk. “It’s just …” He meets my eyes. “Mr. Hendrix—”

“Stewart, please,” I tell him, realizing I didn’t correct him before. We haven’t had a marriage or mating ceremony, but Rome is my fated mate. We don’t need more when the universe already told us we belong together.

“Mr. Stewart,” he amends. “I’m sorry I gave you such terrible news. Looks like you were in that three percent.”

I hold up my hand. “You didn’t do anything wrong. You gave me the facts. You couldn’t have known my mate has such strong swimmers.”

The doc cracks a smile. “Well, I’m glad I’m able to give you some good news, even though it was confirmed before you saw me. You and the baby are healthy, though your iron is low. You need to take those prenatal vitamins every day. Drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest.”

“I’ll make sure he does,” Rome interjects, giving me a look.

I duck my head, face warming. “The prenatals make my stomach hurt.”

“Try some ginger tea if you feel nauseous. You’re almost out of your first trimester, so it should get better. Now, unfortunately, I am not the doctor that can deliver your baby. I only work with reproductive health, so you’ll need to find an obstetrician or family doctor. I know a few and I’ve taken the liberty of writing their names down here.” He hands me a piece of paper. “I recommend Dr. Liam Dorchester. I’ve had many an omega rave about him and his work. The others I listed are great as well, but he’s high on that list.”

I smile, looking at Rome. “I know Dr. Dorchester. He’s Mason’s best friend. We’ll be in good hands with him. He delivered Zane and was really great when I came to visit Brandon after the birth.”

“Dr. Dorchester, it is,” he says with a bright smile.

The drive back home is silent, but not in a bad way. Rome is as immersed in his thoughts as I am. I can’t stop looking at the ultrasound picture, eager to show Tanner.

Over the past few days, I’ve been reassuring him that my being pregnant doesn’t mean I love him any less. I think he believes me, as he’s been helping me pick out clothes and toys for the baby. I’m holding off buying a crib and more furniture until I can rearrange my room to fit everything in there.

Tanner tried to give up his room for the baby, but after what I hope was a withering look, he backed down, saying, “Okay, okay.”

I’m thrilled to know that I was right about Tanner. He’s such a great kid. He’s been a joy to be around, nothing but sweet and loving. I hope we’re not at the beginning of teenage angst, but I have a feeling this will be Tanner all the time. He wears his heart on his sleeve, very kind and loving. Gods, I love my son.

“Want to swing by and get Tanner? He can have a half day and hang out with us.” Tanner has been in school for the past two weeks and he’s really enjoying it. I got him a new phone and it’s practically glued to his hand as he texts his friends. I’m so glad he’s fitting in here. Fair Falls is a good community with good people.

I was worried that he would be teased for his stutter, since kids can be mean, but he told me he brings it up immediately so no one can try to shame him for it. I admire him for that. He might not want to talk around Mason because he thinks his stutter would be seen as a weakness compared to that big alpha—I heard him and Rome talking about it the night we visited Brandon and Mason—but he’s willing to put himself out there with his peers.

What did I do right to get blessed with such a great kid? Whatever it is, I want to keep it up.

“Yeah,” I answer my alpha, putting a hand on his thigh. “We can get lunch and go baby clothes shopping. He loves that.”

We check Tanner out of school and have lunch at the bistro I took Tanner to when we first met.

“Here,” I say, sliding the ultrasound photo to Tanner after we’ve sat down to eat. “Meet your little brother.”
