I am also tempted to tell her about the dreams.

She knows that I have been having bad dreams, but I do not know how she’d react if I told her what was in them.

Amara holds me even closer, and I force myself to revel in the moment.

I just want to cherish this time I have with her.

But all that is destroyed in a moment when every one of the wolves start to howl.

Their howls are deafening, and seem to come from all around us. It’s as if a war alarm has gone off, ringing through the air so loudly that I hear a flock of birds take flight.

Somewhere close by, there is the pounding of hooves against the ground.

A herd of something has been frightened by the wolves,I think as both Amara and I jump out of bed.

“What is it?” I ask her as I find my clothes – clothes she has made for me over the past week.

Alfa and Safira barrel through the door of the house, letting the frigid air in, but I am hot with fright and panic.

Alfa is growling, and flashes of red light up her eyes.

When I look at Amara, she is dressed in a pair of trousers, a shirt, and a coat.

She pulls on her boots as she speaks quickly.

“There are intruders.” She is breathless. I reach for my knife and the spear that I have been whittling for the past two days.

“Wild animals?” I ask her frantically.

“No,” she says slowly, worriedly. “The pack wouldn’t be reacting like this for a coyote or another wolf.”

Amara runs outside then, and I watch as she throws her head back and in seconds, loses all of her humanity.

Her pupils dilate, and her mouth widens impossibly, and she lets out a howl with Alfa.

She’s communicating with them!I realize as the pack sorts itself into groups and moves strategically around the clearing.

I curse myself for not learning the wolf language.

Then Amara turns to me and grabs my arm. Her pupils are still dilated and her chest is heaving.

“They’re here!” she says feverishly.

“Who?” I want to shout but common sense quiets me.

She grabs her own weapon, a massive slingshot that is as large as a crossbow.

“The enemy orcs,” she says before running into the forest.

AMARA

“The enemy orcs!” I tell Kian breathlessly before I grab my slingshot and run into the forest surrounding the clearing.

There are several advantages of living with wolves. The best and most important advantage is that living surrounded by predators inevitably turns you into a predator.

I consider myself human most of the time.
