The wolves might not match up to the strength of the orcs, but the orcs cannot handle all of them and me.

When I am done and all five orcs lay dying, I turn to see Amara, standing behind me.

Her lower lip is bleeding where she has bitten down hard on it, and I jerk my head toward the thicket of trees ahead of us.

She takes a deep breath as if steeling herself for something, and we head through the thicket.

Amara growls at the wolves, and the injured turn around and head back to the house.

There are two more orcs fighting a group of six wolves. This time, Amara jumps into battle with me.

She isn’t as strong as an orc, but she is fast and as intelligent as any warrior I might have known in my past life.

And in her hands, the slingshot is deadly.

I take on one orc while the other one drops to the ground, his mouth broken from the rock that Amara shot directly into his mouth.

His teeth and throat must have been crushed beneath the force of the rock, and I throw my spear to Amara, who grabs it in midair and stabs it down through the orc’s chest.

The orc I am fighting is smaller than I am, and this gives the wolves an advantage. His legs and feet are bloody where he has been attacked by the wolves.

I may not have my spear, but I do not need a weapon to cause damage.

When I turn away from the dead orc, Amara is pulling the spear out of the orc’s chest.

I don’t need my memories to know that this is the first time I’ve ever seen a human hurt an orc.

I smile at the thought before Amara cleans the blood of the spear before she throws it back at me.

“There’s more up ahead,” she says breathlessly. I nod, and we move in silent darkness until we reach a clearing.

I have been in this clearing before when I foraged for vegetables, and it is eerily empty.

I see the orc blundering quickly toward us before Amara does. She has her back turned to him, and he clutches at her from behind, holding a giant ax.

“No!” I cry out and run as quickly as I can. The orc manages to swipe at Amara’s back and barely misses as I grab him from behind and strangle him to death.

The ax falls to the ground.

We’re so deep into the forest that no moonlight or sunlight will ever reach us. We’re so deep into the forest that nothing lives here. Nothing grows here.

I am distracted by my thoughts, which is why I don’t see the four orcs coming out of the blackness around us.

Amara grabs the ax from the ground, and I launch the spear at one of them. She takes two of their heads while I pierce two of them in the chest.

“They’re dead,” I splutter, doubling over as it becomes difficult to breathe. I start to cough, and when I spit up, I spit up small globules of blood.

“Kian!” Amara catches me as I sag to the ground.

The wound in my chest is open again, and blood is oozing from it. There is a new injury in my mouth, and blood coming from my nose now, as well.

“We need to stop! We need to go back!” There is fear in her voice, the kind I have never heard before.

I don’t say anything but swallow as much blood as I can. I do not want to cough it up all over her.

I need to remember her,I tell myself and I examine her face as closely as I can.

You love her. You’ll never forget her.
