“Yeah, that’s fine. But would you sleep in her room? Like how my friend Sam’s parents sleep in the same room?”

“Yes, we would.”

He frowns. “Would you have a lot of sex?”

I cough, surprised by the question, although I shouldn’t be. “That will never be something that you have to worry about. It won’t be an issue for you.”

Jesus, I hope I’m right about that and he doesn’t ever walk in on us the way I walked in on my parents when I was twelve and wanted to poke my eyes out.

“Well, yeah, I mean, if you love us and we love you, we should probably just be together.”

I love how he can get to the heart of it so easily.

“I guess that settles it, then, huh?”

“Do you want me to talk to Mom about it?” he offers, patting my arm. “Maybe I can soften her up.”

“I don’t think it’s going to be a bad conversation,” I reply. “In fact, I think she’ll be pretty happy about it.”

Chapter18

London

“Ithink we’ve made about a billion gingerbread men.” Caleb carefully uses the spatula to move the last cookie from the tray to the cooling rack. “What are we making next?”

“What’s your favorite?” I ask him.

“Gooey butter cookies.” His eyes brighten. “Are we making those today?”

“Yep.” I check my watch and wonder where the morning went. It’s already close to noon. “But we have to hurry because Uncle Rome will be here soon to get you.”

“What’s happening with Uncle Rome?” Drew asks as he saunters into the kitchen, carrying his gym bag over his shoulder. His hair is still damp from his shower at the gym. Since he’ll be moving in soon, I went ahead and gave him the code to the doors and space in the garage.

Even though he hasn’t technically moved in yet, he’s been staying here every night since he talked with Caleb last week.

“He takes Caleb on a special guys-only shopping day before Christmas every year.”

“So I can get Mom something,” Caleb adds and helps me crack an egg into the mixing bowl. “We’re making cookies for Mom’s party tomorrow night.”

“Will you miss this one?” Drew asks as he picks up a gingerbread man and bites off his arm.

“Not now,” I reply with a laugh. “How did it go at the gym?”

“It was good. Most of my guys were in today, even though they have a couple of days off before Sunday’s game, with Christmas falling on Saturday.”

“I want to go to the game,” Caleb announces, and my eyes meet Drew’s across the island. “I never get to go, and I want to watch the guys play and Drew coach. Can we go, Mom?”

“You know, buddy, we’ve talked about this before. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Maybe you could just think about it,” Caleb suggests just as we hear the front door open and Rome call out that he’s here. “Ah, man, I’m gonna miss the gooey butter cookies.”

“They’ll be here when you get home,” I remind him and smile at my brother as he saunters into the kitchen. “Hey. Want some cookies?”

“Always.” He nods to Drew and then smiles down at Caleb. “Hey, have you seen Caleb around here? He’s a little kid, much smaller than you.”

“Ha ha, it’sme, Uncle Rome.”

“What? You grew ten inches since I saw you last.”
