"What kind of mother… If I ever see her, I swear to God." She takes the letter, and I give her a smile, loving her protective nature for me taking over. Shelooks at me again and says, "Are you ok to work? And do we need to inform security?"

I sigh, "I am ok to work. She's not aware that I'm a nurse; she knew I went to college; she just didn't know my major but tell security as a precaution." I handed her the next piece of paper with a printout of my mother from my door this morning with Harris. "This is my mother and her drug dealer; if you give it to security, I would appreciate it."

She nods her head. "Alright, head back to work. Come get me if there are any problems."

I give her a smile and thank her before heading into the staff room to my locker. I then go and see who needs assistance in the E.R., happy to be back at work and not in my own head.

I don't know how long it's been, but I know I missed lunch with how hectic the E.R. is today when my name is shouted from across the room.

"MEL, YOU ARE WITH ME NOW."

I turn to see what's going on, and my eyes widen as a bunch of bikers rush in behind Dr. Thomas, who is rushing after some colleagues into the triage room. I run after them, the bikers parting ways for me to go through the door.

When I enter the triage room, I come to a stop in shock.

A young woman is lying on the gurney covered in blood. Her face is black and blue, and her nose is obviously broken. Still, it's the blood between her legs that's absolutely heartbreaking.

Miscarriage.

Fuck.

I snap into it and ask, "What do you need?"

"Central line stat. The patient is Annalise Lawrence, 25 years old and at high risk of paralysis from a previous injury; she is also pregnant, roughly 8 weeks."

I nod to Dr. Thomas's order while listening to the details of the patient and get to it while he checks her face and then her stomach.

He looks at me and says, "We need an MRI, head C.T., and O.B."

I nod and get to the phone. I call the O.B. first and ensure they come now after explaining all the blood. I then call for an MRI, then a C.T., before going back to the patient. I quickly but gently pull her blonde hair to one side, away from her face, and I look at the doctor. He nods, grabbing her arms in case she wakes, and I take a deep breath.

Using an anesthetic spray, I numb the area. She may be unconscious, but I don't want to cause her much more pain, especially if she was awake when this happened to her, which I am assuming she was. Then I get a speculum and place it in her nose, and with a nod to the doctor, I realign it, and she doesn't move. I quickly pack the nose to catch the blood before I order her IV antibiotics to prevent infection, then place an oxygen mask on her face as Dr. Thomas starts talking.

"Three ribs are cracked; I don't think they're broken, but the MRI can determine that as well if any more damage is done to her back. She definitely has a concussion, so she will need to be admitted for a few days at least. Where's O.B.?"

Just as he asks, the O.B. comes in. Sarah looks at the patient, and she squeezes her eyes shut, seeing all the blood.

"She's definitely lost the baby, but she's lost too much blood. Let's give her a scan to make sure the baby has fully been flushed from her body and ensure she doesn't have any internal bleeding."

I swallow hard, pain for this woman shooting through me. Dr. Thomas looks like he's about to cry. He obviously knows her. I walk to her other side and gently wipe her head with a towel, sweat breaking out on her forehead, while the doctor gives me a small smile. Sarah performs the scan and confirms the baby didn't survive and is free from her womb.

We couldn't have been in this room for more than ten minutes when the monitor suddenly flatlined, and Sarah shouted out,

"WE'RE LOSING HER."

Shit!

We all get into action. I grab the crash cart while the doctor starts CPR. I quickly put the pads on her chest and side before grabbing the paddles and handing them to Sarah.

"CLEAR." She shouts.

The machine shocks the patient, and her pulse comes back, making us all sigh in relief.

"She's lost too much blood; we need to move her now. Mel, can you please inform the family? It's all the bikers out in the waiting room, but don't worry, they're all friendly, I promise. They won't hurt you; Axel is her man."

I nod my head, then turn to Sarah.

"How did her womb look?"
