My smile widens when I see who it is, and I quickly answer,

"Hey, momma."

I can hear the small smile in her voice.

"Hey, baby. I wanted to make sure you're doing OK. I haven't seen you this week, and I wanted to see if you and Todd have fallen in love yet. Or you and Alex?"

I snort and shake my head. "I'm doing good, momma; I've just been working, and no, I haven't fallen in love with the gay couple, so stop planning my wedding."

She chuckles. "I'm proud of you for doing that for him."

I smile. "I was happy to help—even happier when he lowered your mortgage. You still mad at me about that?"

She hums, "No baby…" She's cut off when Sarah knocks on my door and pops her head in. "Hey, Soph," she furrows her brows when she sees my phone, and I mouth, 'Momma,' making her grin before she shouts, "Hey, momma Anderson," making Momma laugh.

"OK, so one of the bikers has brought Diamond in for her check-up, but he's asking for only you."

She raises her brow while a grin spreads across her face as my mouth drops open in surprise.

I hear my Momma clear her throat.

I quickly snap out of my stupor.

"He isn't full of tattoos from the neck downwards, is he, and has a lip ring?"

I swallow hard, waiting for her answer, which I want to be no, right?

She grins wider. "Yep, he says his name is Ink. He's requesting you personally."

Shit.

I hear my mother let out a little squeal, making me narrow my eyes at the phone while Sarah grins. "I'll tell him you'll be ten minutes." She doesn't allow me to say anything before she's out of the door while my mother speaks.

"So, who's this Ink fellow baby girl?"

Double shit.

I clear my throat. "A guy that's part of the local MC in town that Leah knows; we met when I dropped her keys off to her at the bar the other night. Apparently, he was in his last year of high school when we started."

Or so Leah tells me, but he never noticed a freshman.

Momma hums, "Your father loved those boys. They always helped when it was needed."

I smile because it's true: "We, uh, I, crap. There was a connection, Momma, like an all-time-consuming one where once we locked eyes, I couldn't look away from the connection. It was like my mind and body gravitated towards him like he was all I could see, and when he shook my hand, I swear, Momma, I got an electric shock."

My mother brings me out of my ramble when she sniffles, "Momma?" worry, etches my gut, "I'm OK, baby girl. It's just that's how it was for me and your father. You've found your one baby."

I freeze.

No, no, no. I don't want my one, not if the pain my mother feels is possible.

"I know you don't want this; you've seen me struggle day in and day out without your father, but don't fight it, baby. Continue your deal with Todd; you only have three months until he can come out, but in the meantime, make sure this man fights for you; make him work for it because you're worth it, and when he does catch you, and he will, if what you felt is true, he will catch you; fall, baby, fall hard, and don't let go."

I sigh, my heart tugging for my Momma's loss, while the cat meows, making me smile.

Momma sniffles, "Alright, baby, I'm going to let you go and see that cat. I want a sneak picture of this guy in the next twenty minutes, though."

I giggle at her words before we say bye, and I put Mr. Whiskers back in the crate he has here until his owner picks him up this afternoon before taking a deep breath.
