I did CPR,

The paramedics got her pulse back.

We came to the hospital, then...

I look back to Jackson, and a painful whisper escapes me: "No."

It's all I can say as tears fill his eyes.

He leans forward and takes my hand in his before his tears fall.

"I'm so sorry, baby. She couldn't cope with another year without your father. She tried to kill herself."

My breathing picks up, but he keeps going.

"She's currently intubated next door, Pixie, but she's braindead; she's no longer here, baby; her body is, but she's not; I'm so sorry."

No, no, no, no, no

"She, uh, she left you a letter, baby. I haven't read it, but I did open the document; she also left you." He swallows hard. "She left everything in your name: the house, the Mustang, her account, everything, baby."

I look towards the door. I know what he's saying. I understand. She's had this planned for a while. She wanted to leave; she wanted to be with Daddy, leaving me alone.

She's gone.

My eyes are no longer focused, and I can't seem to blink or speak.

I want to scream, but I can't; she's gone, my Momma is gone.

I don't notice when someone comes in or when Jackson tries to tell me he'll be right back.

She's gone.

My Momma.

My family.

Gone.

I'm all alone—no, not alone; she left me with Leah, whom I pushed away.

Alone

I swallow hard; she's next door; well, she isn't, but her body is being kept alive by a machine; her body is, that is, her mind, her soul; they're gone; they're with Daddy now, leaving me all alone in this big world.

Very slowly, I get up and walk towards the door.

I open it, not looking at a man currently standing there.

I hear him shout "INK" as I walk to the room next door.

"Sophie?"

A voice comes from inside the room…Leah.

My only family, but I ignore her and walk over to my mother, my life. I take her hand in mine; it's still warm, so warm, yet she's no longer here.

I feel more bodies in the room—a lot of them.
