“Sure, sure.” Onner nods and hurries out of the control room.

I let out a breath, even though fire is still burning inside me. I suppose it isn’t a waste of time if I find my mate here. But...

I’ve never talked to a human that’s from Earth... And she is a human... But my mating bond won’t lie... This is going to be confusing.

Chapter 2

Zoe

Isitonthebeach mat, staring at the sand ahead. The sun is shining brightly over my head, threatening to roast me alive.

I stretch my arms and lie back on the mat with my arms to the side like a starfish. I close my eyes at once, before the sun can kill me.

It takes a long time to save up and plan the vacation, but...

Maybe I’ve got an expectation that’s too high. Now... Something seems to be missing.

I’ve been working almost all the time. When I get to laze around and do nothing, it feels strange.

What’s wrong with me?

I’ve worked hard and I deserve something nice.

The sound of the waves is calming, something I don’t get to enjoy on an ordinary day. I should take my time and relax.

The waves keep coming and the seagulls quack. At a distance, in the sea, people are surfing. I blink. The sun makes me drowsy. Maybe I should take a nap.

I jolt when there is a scream. I jump to my feet, only to find kids screaming as they chase the large inflated ball with red and white stripes on it.

Stupid me. I’m not on duty, so in theory, I don’t have to dash off to anyone’s rescue.

But I’ve been a paramedic for so long that it gets into my blood. When it appears like something bad is about to happen, I can’t stop myself from reacting to that.

There is a lifeguard here at the beach and there are others who’ll take care of people who get into trouble or hurt themselves. I don’t have to worry about that.

I take a sip of my beer out of the can. It was cold when I took it out of the cooler, but now, it isn’t as cool. Maybe I should have finished it, or put it back there when I’m not drinking.

The mildly cool drink slides down my throat, sending a chill down my spine. I let out a content sigh. Soon, I will be able to lean into this restful time. Then I will have all the energy to get back to work.

I groan at my own thought. Why do I have to keep thinking about work even when I’m at the beach now?

Maybe I’m going to meet a handsome man somewhere.

I stare at my bikini with cartoon dinosaurs on it. Maybe I should have worn something that would make me look a bit more mature.

But I like this one; it is cute and I don’t have many chances wearing these.

Screw whatever people want to think about my taste; if I’m to meet someone, he will like me for who I am and maybe also my dinosaur bikini for how they are.

I finish the beer and squeeze the can flat before I put it into the plastic bag which I will be using for garbage.

Maybe it is time for another beer.

I reach for the cooler, but there are yells from the direction of the sea.

What is happening there?

Part of me wants to stay and wait it out, but I’m here now; it won’t hurt to check things out.
