Page 31 of Baiting the Alien

I go back into the clothing shop. Maybe Zoe has already picked out something. I turn the corner next to the cashier. I think that’s the quickest way to get to her.

This is a stupidly big store, and I hated that. I understand that shops try their best to make beings walk around and spend time looking at different things, but there’s no reason to make stores like a maze.

I take another corner, and I think I’m where I left her.

But...

Zoe isn’t there.

My heart skips a beat when the marking on me starts burning. I take a deep breath and hurry to the nearby aisles.

There’s no one there and not a hint of Zoe.

My ears twitch as I try to capture her noise, but the music in the store is too strong.

I run down a few more corridors, but she isn’t in sight.

Blood runs cold inside me, and my mind draws blanks. She is gone... Maybe...

My head hurts. Maybe she has been lying to me. Maybe she has never wanted to stay here with me. She had to when there was no way for her to leave on the spaceship, but now that I gave her a chance.

Why did I leave her alone?

I let out a sigh as I meander my way to the exit of the shop again. If Zoe doesn’t want to stay here and be my mate, maybe I should let her.

There is a pulse of heat inside me, and it feels like my body can explode. Zoe is my mate and I won’t find anyone else to replace her... Maybe Onner is right. I should have asked her instead. She hates how I make decisions for her and...

At a side door, there are two blue beings. They... seem to struggle to get out of the door. Why are they walking out of the door with their body stuck together?

Unless... They are holding something between them.

Maybe they bought a ton and...

There is a scorching pain inside me that screams and shouts. A fury of rage brews inside me even though there’s no reason for that other than how Zoe left me.

I run to those creatures regardless. Something inside me shouts at how I can’t leave those alone.

They see me, and they hurry out of the door. It doesn’t seem like they are moving along just so I can get out of the door.

“What are you doing there?” I growl at them. Something fishy is happening.

One of them pulls a gun at me. I duck behind the wall of the shop when the laser hits the rack instead.

I sweep my leg at one of them, only to hear a scream.

Zoe!

She is kicking, and she is the reason these beings walk funny!

I pull my laser gun and fire at these two blue beings, but one of them hoists Zoe in front of himself and I can’t shoot at him.

These fucking males!

The other points his laser gun at me. “Drop your weapon before we kill this one.”

I clench my laser gun but have to lower it before they will hurt Zoe...

That one continues, “You are lucky we aren’t reporting you. You know that humans are out of reach.”
