“Except this isn’t my order.”

My blood almost freezes when I look up from the plate to the customer. He’s a nogzul, a gray being with a tail in a handsome suit. But he scowls at me and certainly isn’t happy.

I swallow and lift the plate again. “I’m so sorry about that.”

He glances at the side. Is he looking for my manager? Fuck...

I’m about to turn away to leave when he says, “Table thirteen is next to the entrance.”

“Oh... Thank you.”

His eyes widen on me. I swallow. Did I say something wrong?

Dammit! Maybe a thank you would make it seem like I don’t know where the table is. If my manager finds out that I took the help of a customer, she’ll be so mad that she’ll explode.

I know being on shift at the peak of the holiday has never been great, but... Fuck...

I hurry off before he can say anything else and when I sense my manager’s glare on me from the counter.

I turn around, only slamming into someone and all the food on my plate splats onto him.

That is a big male with an expensive-looking suit. He hisses and shows off his horns at me. “What the hell with this?”

I shudder and hurry to look for something, a tissue or a towel, but the plate slips off my hand and crashes into pieces on the floor.

Now, the whole restaurant is staring at me in silence, while I freeze at the spot without knowing what to do.

Do I pick up the pieces? Grab a towel? Both? Something else?

The male grabs my collar while the other one by his side nudges him to let go of me.

The one with food on his clothes hisses again. “Where is the manager?”

My manager comes storming over with another waitress behind her with cleaning utensils. My blood freezes at her glare on me. She is going to murder me without a single doubt...

I move to help with the cleaning when my manager clears her throat. She points at the door. “Come into the office. Get out of here now.” She turns to the patron. “We are so sorry about this. I-- We will right this and--”

The male growls at her. “Give me someone who can make a decision. Do you even how much this suit costs?” He leans in close to the manager, almost jabbing his finger at her face. “Your pesky wage won’t even pay for that, let alone that dumb woman’s.”

Fuck...

The manager takes a step back. “Okay, I’ll let my manager talk to you. We are very sorry about that and the hotel will do all we can to mitigate with the situation.” She gives the other waitress a look and that hurries to clean up the scene.

The patron grunts and swears under his breath while the one who’s with him trying to talk him down.

The manager turns to me. “My office. Get walking now.”

She walks with her head high, as if she’s the queen of the world. Her high heels click-clock on the marble floor. I try my best to hold back my tears, staring at the floor as if I’ve dropped a coin.

“Silvia, I think I’ve already warned you about your work attitude.”

We aren’t even in her office yet, but she already started with her lecture.

The corridor to the staff office is mostly quiet and devoid of any beings. It’s a busy hour and far away from the end of a shift, so no one is around.

There seems to be an invisible leash, grabbing me and yanking me along.

“I gave you a chance. We’re both humans, so I’ve been lenient with you. But your attitude…” she lets out a loud sigh, as if she’s worried that I won’t be able to hear her. “Do you know how important it is to stay attentive on your shift and look at what you’re doing?”
