‘You think he’d still be Father George and not just plain old George if he had?’

‘Sure, Bryant, cos it’s not like the Church has ever covered anything up before, is it?’ she asked.

He sighed. ‘You know, sometimes I wish I could have the last word on something.’

‘Keep trying, partner. It’s very entertaining,’ she said as he slowed the car down in the Lowesmoor Wharf car park. The area was a collection of nondescript two-storey office buildings which was not what Kim had been expecting.

A woman in her early thirties with a blunt fringe smiled as they approached the reception desk.

They both held up their IDs. ‘May we speak to someone about one of your clergymen?’

Bryant looked over her shoulder.

She ripped the page out and placed it on the reception desk.

‘There you go. In writing.’

The woman read her hastily scribbled note.

Dear Sirs,

Father George Markinson of St John’s, Halesowen is a dangerous, intolerant knob. Every day and all the time.

Yours faithfully,

The Police.

‘I’m sorry, but I can’t accept this as a written complaint.’

‘Then we’re just gonna wait over here until you throw us out,’ Kim said, taking a seat on one of the chairs by the window.

It was after four so Kim was sure it wouldn’t be all that long.

The woman glanced at them a few times.

Kim took out her phone and sent a text message.

Bryant took out his phone and read the message, which instructed him to look at his phone. He replied:
