‘Then you should be out of here in no time and free to continue with your day.’

‘Today, of all days. I honestly don’t know how I can help you.’

‘You can begin by telling us why you lied about meeting Sandy last Thursday. We have the CCTV footage of you two together.’

‘I don’t recall actually stating that we didn’t meet.’

‘Oh, I think you’ll find that you did. My colleague here writes down things in his pocket notebook, habit from his constable days. I’m sure we can read it back. He keeps impeccable records. You lied to us and I’d like to know why.’

He recrossed his legs. ‘I think I evaded the question, but if you must know, it was for this very reason. I didn’t want to get caught up in this distasteful business.’

‘The distasteful business of a woman losing her life?’ Kim asked.

‘Yes, it’s all so tawdry. I didn’t want my good name anywhere near it.’

‘Why did you meet her?’ Kim asked. ‘You didn’t like her, you had a cruel nickname for her, as you did for all of your fellow psychics, so why did you agree to meet her?’

A flick of the left shoulder.

‘She asked you many times. We saw the entries in her diary. Why agree this time?’

‘I decided to put her out of her misery.’

‘About what?’

He rolled his eyes. ‘My second article.’

‘You’ve written another hit piece?’

‘I prefer to call them exposés,’ he said blithely. ‘The first one hit her career hard, and she wanted me to kill the second one.’

‘And what did you tell her?’

‘No, of course. She deserved to be exposed for the fraud that she was.’

The CCTV images flew into her mind. Sandra, literally begging him not to publish, and his uncaring manner, his cold refusal in the face of her pleas.

‘What was the last thing you said to her, as you left?’ Kim asked.

‘I told her that her career was over.’

Kim fought hard to keep control of her emotions. There was not one ounce of regret in his tone despite the fact the woman had been brutally murdered.

‘Mr Dunhill, where were you on Sunday night?’

‘At home, alone.’

‘Where were you in the early hours of Tuesday morning?’

‘In bed asleep like most normal people.’

‘Interesting. How about Tuesday night into Wednesday morning?’

‘At home, alone.’

‘After Victoria’s stage show?’ she asked.

He nodded.
