‘I watched the show, got a taxi home and went to bed.’
‘Obviously you’ll be able to give us the name of the taxi company so we can confirm it. Why did you go and see the Show Pony if you detest her so much?’
‘The publication of my article was imminent and I just wanted to ensure my observations were still correct.’
‘And?’
‘I’m sad to say they were. She was still the Show Pony she always was.’
‘And now she’s dead,’ Kim observed.
Dunhill said nothing.
‘No response?’
‘I don’t recall hearing a question.’
Oh, his arrogance was unfailing, despite the fact he was under arrest for their murders.
‘Did Victoria know about the article?’ Kim asked. She hadn’t mentioned it during their conversation.
‘She knew and didn’t care. Her career was not harmed by the first.’
Yeah, she had admitted that much.
‘But what about yours, Mr Dunhill? We understand that the first article didn’t exactly increase your client list?’
His eyes sparked but he covered it with a long blink that lasted almost two seconds.
‘Natural wastage, Inspector. It happens in every successful business. I can assure you that I have not suffered financially and my current client list is incredibly healthy.’
‘With ex-reality stars and WAGs?’ Kim asked.
His jaw tensed but he remained silent.
‘So what was the angle for the new article going to be? More nicknames, more insults, more victims?’
‘You say that as though the article is in the past.’
‘Isn’t it, given that two of your subjects have been brutally murdered within days of each other?’
‘Quite the contrary. Public interest is at its highest. There’s no better time to publish.’
Kim was appalled at his bad taste.
‘And to answer your question, yes, there is a new addition to my stable of subjects.’
‘And does this one have a nickname too?’
He smiled. ‘Yes, I call her Grandma.’
A chill began to steal over her.
‘You’re talking about Eloise Hunter?’
‘Actually, yes I am. She’s earned a mention.’
