‘Germ.’

‘For who?’ she asked, although she could take a pretty good guess.

‘Phone psychics. Much of his venom was reserved for them. Hated them with a passion.’

Kim bristled. The nineteen-year-old boy lying in a pool of his own blood had been anything but a germ.

‘They’re not germs. They’re just folks doing a job,’ Kim said, surprising herself.

‘Tell that to the precious purist. He’s lobbying for a governing body.’

Kim wasn’t all that surprised. But her thoughts turned from Monty Dunhill to the foremost reason for wanting a chat.

‘We’ve got a second victim,’ she offered.

‘Linked to Sandy?’ Victoria asked, frowning.

‘Linked to the community,’ Kim said and allowed a few seconds for that to sink in.

‘Jesus.’

‘Have you noticed anything strange?’ Kim asked. ‘Weird phone calls, same face turning up close to home, particularly unhappy customers?’

Victoria shook her head. ‘Absolutely nothing. Can you tell me who the second victim is?’

‘A phone psychic. I don’t think you’d know him.’

‘You are kidding me?’

Kim shook her head.

‘Bloody hell.’

‘I think you need to take precautions.’

‘You think I might be in danger?’ she asked as her eyes widened.

‘Someone is attacking your community and you were named in that article.’

‘You can’t think Monty had anything to do with it?’

‘We don’t think anything. My sole intention here is to warn you to take precautions. Make sure you’re not alone. Tell people where you’re going. Check in with family members throughout the day.’

‘I’ll be fine,’ she said dismissively. ‘I’m psychic. Surely if anyone was coming after me, I’d be the first to know.’

Kim was unsure if she was joking, but again she was reminded that the most dangerous psychics were the ones who thought they were real.

She stood. ‘Okay, thanks for your time and stay safe.’

Victoria nodded, and Kim headed for the door.

‘Officer, there’s something I’m tussling over whether to share with you or not.’

Kim turned but didn’t take her hand off the door handle.

‘That sentence dictates you’ve already made that decision.’

‘It’s probably nothing. It’s just something Monty Dunhill said at a party a couple of months ago.’
