I squeeze her shoulders, then drop one of my hands to claim hers, lifting it on its usual place on my chest. “You know me so well. But I’m not just grateful for Dunkins. Pumpkin has a special place in my heart too.”

“Oh?” She wraps her hand around the bit of my shirt she’s holding. “Is it because she broke my ankle?”

“She really seemed to have a vested interest in making sure we were stuck together. So did the elevator. It’s a shame they’re replacing it. I’d buy it if I could.”

Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who’d gotten stuck—just the two people who’d gotten stuck for the longest.

She’s beaming at me, making me feel like I’m on the top of the world. Like I’m a man who can do anything he sets his mind to. “What would we do with an elevator?”

“Sleep in it. We could put it in our bedroom.”

“I think I’ll pass, but I’m pretty damn grateful to it too. And when we go around the table later, I think I might have to give a special shout out to pumpkin spice lattes. You’ve really changed my mind about them.”

I lift a hand to her cheek. “Look at you, getting all basic on me.”

“You love it.”

“I do. And I love you, Mira Evans.”

“I love you too, Bo Peep.”

I bend to her as she lifts to me, almost as if we choreographed it, and we’re still kissing when the door swings open.

“Oh, sorry,” Ruthie says, grinning in a way that says she’s not. “But I was worried you’d abandoned us to Josie.”

“We’re coming in,” I say.

She nods, and disappears back inside, leaving the door open a crack. I let my hand linger on Mira’s cheek for a second.

“You ready for this?” she asks, smiling.

“Probably not, but I think I have a couple of hours left. If you start a game of Charades, all bets are off.”

Her hand flexes on my shirt. “Agreed.”

“Shall we go back in?”

“I guess we have to.” She’s being wry, but I know she wants to. She’s got that parade of construction paper turkeys waiting for her, after all. I swing the door open.

It’s loud inside, and full of scents that now include the dissonance of bean dip, Chinese food, and Thanksgiving sides and pies. But I have to be honest: I don’t think there’s ever been a better holiday.

Maybe Josie was right about another thing to—it’s time to reclaim Thanksgiving.

We walk inside, my arm around Mira, to do just that.
