“I’ve just been super busy getting caught up on my classes.” Which was partially true. He’d been able to keep up with a lot of things remotely, but there had been a couple of projects he’d fallen behind on.

Mostly, he’d just been prioritizing getting off as much as he could with the sexy Hellhound sharing his apartment instead of Kappa stuff.

“Whatever,” Thad said, sounding unconvinced. “You’re coming to the meeting tomorrow, right? The party is this weekend, and we need to make sure everything’s in place.”

“I’m not sure…” Remi said, chewing on his lip and sinking onto the edge of his bed. “My, uh, head of security—”

“Oh god, that’s right. You brought that thing back to campus with you.”

“Don’t call him that,” Remi hissed, eyes on the closed bedroom door. He prayed Jeremiah was already in his meeting and hadn’t heard that.

“Oh, come on! Hellhounds are barely more than animals—”

“We’re together.” He wasn’t sure how he got the words out through his gritted teeth, but they shut Thad up.

At least for a second.

“Man, he’s smarter than I thought they could be,” Thad said, laughing.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Thad sighed, and his voice softened. “Look, Rem, I know you aren’t real experienced, but even you have to see what he’s doing, right?”

A knot of bad feelings began to grow in the pit of his stomach. “I don’t… What…”

“Alright, bro, so it’s like this: you’re a prince. He’s scum of the Supe world. Hooking up with you only benefits him. I mean, come on.” When Remi just sputtered, indignant at the scum comment on top of the implication that Remi was somehow better than Jeremiah in any way, Thad said, “Plus, didn’t you say he was, like, really good-looking?”

Remi made a noise that was barely more than a squeak.

“So… why else would he be fucking someone like you? No offense,” Thad added as an obvious afterthought.

But offense was very much taken.

The words were creeping in on him though, burying in his brain and planting seeds of doubt. He didn’t think Jeremiah was using him for status necessarily, but maybe… maybe something else? Maybe Remi was just conveniently there and inexperienced enough to think great sex meant more than it really did. Maybe he was just imagining the feelings growing between them.

There was some laughing in the background, and Remi’s face flushed. Was he on speakerphone?

Before he could ask, Thad continued decimating all the good feelings Remi had managed to gather inside himself in the last few weeks. “I wonder if your parents told him to use whatever means necessary to keep you in line.” The laughter grew louder. “I have to admit it’s fucking effective—we haven’t seen you at all in the two weeks you’ve been back. Must be a nice dick.”

Humiliated and confused, Remi wrapped his arm around his middle and squeezed. “It’s not like that.”

“So you are coming tomorrow, then? The beast isn’t the one calling the shots?”

Feeling like he might vomit, Remi forced the words out in a steady voice. “I’ll be there.”

JEREMIAH

“I don’t like this.”

Remi rolled his eyes at him, and Jeremiah resisted the urge to drive them back to the apartment and lock him in the bedroom. Permanently.

His instincts were on edge, his beast barely staying tucked under his skin, even with his scent fresh on Remi’s skin. It felt like the answer to the question of who the fuck was after the royals was right in front of him, but he couldn’t see it. He was too close.

He glanced at Remi, his eyes lingering on the patch of skin on his neck where he kept biting.

Way too close.
