It was up to me to stop that from happening. Up to me to save Amerie from the fate that was decided for her when she was only four years old. Up to me to reveal the sick truth to the whole world.

I got out of my car, slammed the door behind me, and strode toward the main entrance of the school, fists still clenched in anger. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Hillary and Rhea waving at me. I pretended I didn’t see them, too furious to fake a smile and wave for those fucking bitches. They weren’t third-degree Rosmerta members, but they were still part of the scheme to ruin Amerie’s life and convince her she was crazy, so as far as I was concerned, they were just as bad.

As I entered the hall, I heard whispers and giggles from somewhere on my left.

“There he is. She’s not here, though.”

“Are they still dating?”

“No way, he probably dropped her as soon as he found out she’s a filthy junkie whore.”

“Maybe you’ll finally have a chance with him now, Sophie.”

“No, I heard he visited her at the hospital. I guess she gives really good blowjobs and he can’t give that up.”

“I guess all the coke she snorts would give her the energy to fuck for hours.”

“Yeah, but I’m just as good, and I don’t have any diseases like that dumb whore.”

My heart rate increased, and all my muscles tensed. I turned toward the gossiping threesome, lips twisting into a snarl. “What the fuck are you talking about?” I asked, voice dripping with fury.

The girls looked petrified. “Sorry, Jensen. I didn’t see you there,” one of them squeaked. Fucking liar. “We were just talking about… um…”

“A reality show,” one of the others cut in. “It’s totally crazy.”

“What’s crazy is the fact that you actually think I’d believe that bullshit,” I said, crossing my arms. “One more word about Amerie and you’ll fucking regret it. Got it?”

The girls nodded, eyes wide with panic.

“Which one of you is Sophie?” I asked.

A blonde girl on the left raised a quivering hand. I let out a derisive snort as I gave her a onceover. “For the record, you’ll never have a chance,” I said. “I’d rather get a blowjob from a fucking cheese grater.”

With that, I stormed off, anger still simmering just below the surface.

I turned into another hall and immediately spotted another group of snickering students. I followed the direction of their gazes and saw a scrawled message on Amerie’s locker.

CRACKWHORE.

Someone spotted me and frantically nudged one of their snickering friends while whispering something in his ear. The guy’s laughter instantly dried up, and he looked over at me with fearful eyes and elbowed someone else.

The message spread like wildfire, and within seconds, the entire hallway had gone silent.

“Who the fuck did this?” I said, motioning to the locker with narrowed eyes.

No one answered. Everyone within five feet of me either shrugged or looked down at their shoes, faces pale and limbs trembling. As I swept my furious gaze around the hall, I spotted two familiar seniors standing directly across from Amerie’s locker, whispering to each other. One of them had a tissue sticking out of his right blazer pocket. It had dark red smudges on it—the same color as the words scrawled on Amerie’s locker.

“You little motherfucker.” I strode toward him, grabbed him by the shoulders and slammed him up against the locker behind him.

“Jensen, stop!” the girl beside him pleaded. “It wasn’t Xavier!”

I pulled one hand back and snatched the tissue out of his pocket. “What the fuck is this, then?”

Xavier stared at me, palms lifted in surrender. “I know what it looks like,” he said, voice quavering. “But it wasn’t me. I like Amerie. I was just trying to clean that stuff off her locker.”

The girl next to him—Izzy, if I remembered correctly—nodded fervently. “It’s true. We tried to clean it but it’s painted on, so we could barely get any of it off.”

I narrowed my eyes, pinning her with my gaze. I’d seen her hanging out with Amerie before, and they seemed to have an amicable relationship, so she was likely telling the truth.
