Jensen returned his attention to the laptop, right index finger hovering over the keyboard. A muscle in his jaw twitched, and he finally pressed the enter key, eyes gleaming with vengeful exhilaration.

“Done.”

Amerie

“Well, that was anti-climactic.” Piper stood up straight and stretched her arms, letting out a silent yawn.

Jensen raised a brow. “People need time to read everything we wrote and watch the video,” he said. “Then they need time to digest it. Figure out whether it’s real or just some sort of marketing campaign for an upcoming movie.”

“Fair enough.” Piper lifted one shoulder in a noncommittal shrug. “I guess all the media people you sent it to also need time to check their inbox. They probably get tons of emails every day.”

“Exactly. So it’s a waiting game now,” Jensen replied. As he spoke, one hand gently rubbed my forearm, as if to reassure me this was all real and not a dream conjured up by my mind to protect me from the truth. “For now, we should settle in here. Rest for a while. We’ve all had a rough day.”

“Right.” Piper turned her attention to the couch. “I’m going to have a little afternoon nap. You two can go off and have some alone time, if you want.”

I looked at Jensen, head tilting slightly in a quizzical gesture. Piper noticed and rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry. I won’t run away, or anything like that,” she said, folding her arms. “Now that those emails have been sent and I’m clearly the one who filmed the video, I’m at just as much risk as you two. So even if I wanted to leave, I couldn’t.”

With that, she flopped down on the couch and buried her head under a cushion.

Jensen squeezed my hand. “Let’s leave her to it,” he murmured. “We can go in one of the other rooms.”

We trudged across the room, toward the hallway entrance. I cast one last look over my shoulder. Piper was still lying on the couch, face hidden by the cushion. “Are you sure you trust her?” I asked Jensen in a hushed tone.

He nodded. “She’s gone along with everything so far. I couldn’t have done it without her.”

“I know she saved me today, but…” I trailed off and bit my bottom lip. “I just can’t believe you managed to get her to switch sides so fast.”

“It wasn’t that fast. Our terrorization scheme really kicked things off.” Jensen rubbed my shoulder. “You did the most work with that. Your performance in her bedroom that night when we sent her the creepy intruder tape… that was what pushed her over the edge in the end. The fear that she’d end up like you. She was seriously terrified.”

He paused at a doorway and looked inside. As with the other rooms, all the decorations had been removed, but there was still a bedframe with a mattress and two floral-patterned armchairs by the window. “Looks cozy,” he said. “Want to hang out in here?”

“Sure.” I stepped over the threshold, heart pounding as adrenaline coursed through my veins. I waited for Jensen to close the door behind us before speaking up again. “Jensen, I need to—”

His mouth on mine left me wordless and breathless. He kissed me like he’d never known anything else, one hand tightly gripping the side of my face while the other clutched my jaw, forcing me to tilt my head upward and open my mouth for him to explore. To anyone else, his actions might seem dominant and overwhelming, but I could taste his desperation and worry for me at the same time; feel his softness even when his hands were iron-tight on my face.

Tears of joy and relief sprang to my eyes. I was standing in a strange, unfamiliar house, but somehow I still felt as if I’d just come home. It felt like I was floating, like I’d drift away if Jensen weren’t holding me so tightly.

He pulled back, and my heart ached as he stared down at me, eyes dark with need. “I can’t lose you,” he muttered. The hand on the side of my head had loosened now, slowly skimming my cheek in soft rubbing motions. “I love you, Amerie. So much.”

“I love you too.” I took a deep breath and straightened my spine. “There’s something else I need to tell you.”

“What is it?” he asked, taking a short step back. His voice was softer now, like he’d sensed the worry beneath my words.

“Well, um… remember how Dr. Carmichael told me she was giving me that birth control shot? But she was actually knocking me out and inseminating me?” I said. Jensen nodded, and I went on. “It didn’t work. At least that’s what they think now.”

“The insemination didn’t work, you mean?”

I nodded. “That’s right.”

Confusion flickered in Jensen’s eyes. “So you’re not pregnant?”

“No, I am. It’s just not…” I trailed off and averted my eyes, nervously biting my bottom lip again. Then I took a shallow, nervous breath and looked back up. “Remember Halloween?”

“Yeah, of course. But—” Jensen abruptly stopped, eyes widening as they skated down to my abdomen. “Wait. Are you saying it’s my baby?”

“Yes.” I looked down again, pulse racing. “Maybe, anyway. They aren’t totally sure. We’ll have to get a DNA test to know for cer—

Jensen cut me off, one arm suddenly whipping around my waist to pull me close. The other hand wrapped itself around my jaw again, cradling my chin and tilting it upward for another long, hard kiss. “Fuck the DNA test,” he finally muttered, pulling away. “I don’t need it.”
