She snapped her fingers on the last word, a smug smile spreading across her plump lips. I noticed that she still hadn’t mentioned Paxton yet. Because of our recent rift and lack of communication, she must not have realized that we were in a relationship now, or that he knew just as much about the current situation as me and Tate.

God… Tate.

“What did you do to Tate?” I asked, recalling the blood on his forehead. “Is he going to be okay?”

“Nope. I took care of that situation. Attempted carjacking in the parking lot gone wrong. Oops.” She shrugged. “At least that’s what the cops will think when they find his body.”

My heart ached as tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn’t believe Tate was really gone, just like that.

“You won’t get away with any of this,” I said in a hollow voice.

“Actually, I will.” Michaela smiled. “Here’s what’s going to happen. Your dad will be fine. I’ve already told him that I’ll deny the affair, and I’ll testify against you if necessary. I’ll say the thing about your dad and me was just another one of your loony fictions. Like the time you falsely accused Paxton of murder.”

I gritted my teeth. “Dad admitted it on tape.”

“Your dad has a lot of high-up connections, Sienna. They can easily make that recording vanish.”

“So what happens now, then?” I asked, stomach churning. “What are you going to do to me?”

“Well, everyone already knows you’re a complete nutjob. So I’ll take you to a lookout somewhere. Push you off. They’ll think you killed yourself after all the trauma you went through lately. Hearing about your friend Tate’s tragic murder in the parking lot was simply the last straw for you.”

“You don’t think it’ll look suspicious if the people who uncovered your affair with my dad are both killed within a few hours of each other?”

Michaela scoffed again. “I already thought of that. I’m not killing you tonight. I’m going to wait a few days.”

“So where are we going now?”

“My family’s vacation house in Cape Charles. No one ever goes there this time of year.”

I swallowed hard, heart racing with terror. “How can you do this?” I asked, voice almost cracking. “I thought we were friends.”

“Friends?” Michaela laughed drily. “We haven’t been friends for years.”

“Yes we have! Best friends!”

She let out a disdainful sniff. “Sienna, you went to New Zealand for over a year, and you barely even spoke to me while you were there. Is that what a real friend would do? Ignore her so-called besties for a whole year?”

I stared at her, eyes widening with incredulity. “Are you fucking serious?” I said. “I was only at the retreat in New Zealand because I was trying to work through all the mental issues I had which were directly caused by you when you tried to murder me!”

“Whatever.” She rolled her eyes again. “Anyway, we weren’t friends for ages before that. Not really. You and Tate were always much closer to each other. I was just the third wheel.”

“That’s not true!”

“It is. But after I started things with your dad, it was convenient for me to pretend we were all still besties,” she said. “I didn’t feel it, though. Sorry.”

I slowly shook my head, still unable to believe any of this was really happening.

“Did you do it alone?” I asked in a low voice.

“Do what?”

“The massacre.” I stared at her, eyes narrowed. “If you’re going to kill me, you could at least tell me all the details first.”

Michaela let out another sigh. “Fine. What was your question?”

“Did you do it all alone?”

“Yup.”
