Kris shakes her head. “Oh, but it is. Clover has been through enough. If it weren’t bad enough that her husband cheated on her, now she’s facing backlash on social medial. Insinuation she’s associated with all of his bad deeds. Typical. Blame the woman for the shit the man did. Gives people a reason to let him off the hook. Just look at Ronni. She’s still dealing with the aftermath of Kircher.”

“What do you mean by that? I’m genuinely interested.” Not just because of Clover. Or Ronni. Kris is a woman I’ve encountered for years, and I respect her success. Her perspective.

“Joar, let me ask you something. Why were you here and why are you suddenly back?” She tilts her head, deliberately responding to my question with one of her own.

I gulp. Not quite sure how to answer. “Well…”

“Don’t think just because it hasn’t been publicly announced yet I don’t know Jacoby International took over Eminence Partners.” Kris crosses her arms. “Is Clover aware of that connection?”

I scrub my forehead with my hand. “I came back to tell her.”

Understanding and slight disdain spreads across Kris’s face. “And why would you feel compelled to do that?”

My stomach drops to my feet.

She knows. She fucking knows.

Then I recover. So the fuck what? Kris Blakely is not my boss. I don’t need to tell her anything.

“That’s none of your concern.” My jaw sets. I glare at her.

“Oh, yes it is. Anything that happens on my set, on my show concerns me. So, how about I tell you, ‘JJ.’“ Kris uses finger quotes when she spits out my nickname. takes a step back and assesses me. “A media mogul comes to Vancouver BC to ‘check’ on his little production facility. Except, the real reason he’s here is to confront the wife of a man who stole millions from the company you just bought. Why? Because just like every other man, you’ve jumped to the conclusion that she got away with something.”

I mumble, “Not exactly.”

“Your face says everything, Joar. The details aren’t important. The bottom line is you were in town for Clover. And your intentions were not pure.” Kris stabs her finger toward me.

“Fine.” I concede. “At first, I was here because I thought she took the money. I don’t anymore.” I toss my head smugly.

Kris bursts out laughing so hard that she clutches at a concrete post. Throws her head back and loses it again while I stand there oblivious to what is so goddamn funny.

“You seriously thought Clover Callahan would steal? From whom?” Kris wipes her eyes.

I shake my head. “You know I can’t tell you that.”

“It doesn’t matter. So, would you like to tell me about the elevator?” Kris smirks.

The mike drops.

She wins. I’m speechless.

“Don’t worry. I took care of it. Erased the footage. Paid off the security guards. Leave it to a woman to protect another woman’s honor.” She kisses me on the cheek and strides away before looking over her shoulder and winking. “You’re a good man, Joar. Get your shit together, sell the stupid watch and stay away from Clover. Oh, and nice cock by the way.”

She leaves me standing there alone with my jaw firmly implanted on the floor.

Chapter thirteen

Clover

Half Hour Later

It took longer than I thought.

JJ—Joar Jacoby—the man who took over Harrison’s company and exposed his fraudulent ways, pounds on my dressing room door.

If I’d been smart, I would have left ten minutes ago and come back tomorrow. I’m not smart though. Or maybe I am. Ugh. I think seeing him again, just when I’d made peace with what happened that night…

I’m shook.
