Right now I have no time. I’ve got to change for lunch with Kris Blakely at the Polo Lounge. Settling on a dark-pink Chanel sleeveless shirt dress, nude pumps and a multicolored scarf tied in my hair, I manage to get there a minute before she does.

“You’re gorgeous.” Kris is one to talk. She’s always effortlessly chic. Today she wears a simple black pantsuit with a yellow tank top.

I hug her tightly. “I’m so happy to see you.”

We’re seated in a prime booth location on the patio. Hollywood movers and shakers are scattered at tables all around us. God, I haven’t been here in years. I find myself distracted by all of the celebrities.

“This series is going to catapult you to a new level. Are you ready?” Kris puts on reading glasses and scans the menu.

She expressed this to me throughout filming, so it’s not a new sentiment. Sitting here with so many industry people, though, it hits home. “I don’t know.”

“We should get you into media training. You’ll need a stylist. PR.” Kris sets the menu down. “Has Thad talked to you about all of this?”

Thad. I can admit it, he fucking sucks. “No.”

After we order, Kris subtly points out a man and woman a few tables away. “Sandy Hoffman and Ira Malik.”

“I know who they are. They’re with Isis Management.” I glance at a distinguished man with long, gray hair and a sophisticated woman with a crimson bob who is slightly younger.

“Yes. Why aren’t you represented by them? They’re the best.” She gestures with her fork.

I puff out a breath of air. “Because I was being stubborn.”

“Don’t be so stubborn that you shoot yourself in the foot. I guess I should ask how it’s going with Joar?” Kris looks me directly in the eye. “He’s—a lot.”

I like Kris, but I don’t know her well. Ronni’s best friend and business partner has stuck by her throughout her issues, so I know she’s trustworthy. She’s not my person, though. I go for simplicity. “We’re together.”

“Oh.” She raises her eyebrows. A look of confusion flashes across her face. Just for an instant.

Instantly my hackles are up. She’s about Joar’s age, did they…?

No.

Please, no.

“Is there something you need to tell me?” My tone is probably more angsty than I’d have liked. That being said, as much as I’ve grown to trust JJ, I can’t ignore who he is.

What he’s done in his past.

Kris rests her cheek on her palm. “Oh, God. Clover, it isn’t like that.“ She shakes her head. “I’ve known Joar a long time. He’s always been on the right side of things ethically, as far as I’m concerned. A little intense, as you probably know. I’ll say this. He’s married to his company. Not someone I’d have pictured you with after Harrison.”

“Yeah…” I’m relieved, of course and interested in what she has to say, but I’m certainly not going to reveal my private business.

“You know he’s had a private investigator following both you and Harrison for the past year, right? Has he told you that?” Kris stabs a piece of lettuce like she’s pissed.

Acid pools in my belly. “It was a while ago.”

Kris clenches her jaw. Then her face softens. “Clover…”

No.

I drop my fork on my plate.

Fuck.

“It’s none of my business.” Kris takes my hand. “I don’t know Joar well enough to judge. I just thought you should know he’s having you followed. Probably has to do with your ex.”

I nod. Push my plate away because I’m not hungry anymore. Not in the least. “Thank you for letting me know. I’ll talk to him.”
