“Yes, but the Drakes are the ones out of all of them who will get done what needs to be done. It seems strange to me that the English branch of our family would be indisposed. Why call in Kian to settle things? It’s all very odd, if you ask me.”

“Kian is more skilled than any English Drake. All of our boys are.”

“True.”

“That’s not really what’s on your mind, is it?”

Perry fanned his toes, then wiggled them. His gaze passed from his foot up Sebastian’s bare thighs to his chest, which was likewise bare. It was a short journey from there to Sebastian’s unreadable face.

“No, I suppose not,” he said after a moment spent in admiration of his lover. “I know that Kian is more skilled and therefore in demand, but… I can’t help but daydream there’s more going on than meets the eye. I’m bored with being trapped here, Sebastian. I want to know what’s changed since I lost my freedom. What of Walter? He must be distraught I’m not available to visit. Has his pregnancy been going well? He’s two months short of giving birth, if my memory hasn’t failed me. Tell me it’s been easy for him. The poor boy deserves only the best.”

Sebastian added a pump of lotion to his palm.

Socks were now a certainty.

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know?” Perry propped himself up on his elbows. “He’s your father’s mate.”

“Yes.”

“Which means the babe he’s carrying will be your sister.”

“Yes.”

“So matters pertaining to the pregnancy must concern you.” Perry hesitated. “Right?”

Sebastian shrugged and worked his thumb into the arch of Perry’s foot. The pleasure brought by his touch was otherworldly and likely heightened by an infusion of emotion through their mate bond. It struck Perry in such a visceral way that he dropped from his elbows to the bed and relaxed as it washed through him.

Unfortunately for Sebastian, it was not enough to distract him from the conversation.

Once the pleasure receded, Perry propped himself back up and set his sights on his mate. “Sebastian? Answer me, please.”

Sebastian’s typically stoic expression drooped with reluctance. He looked, very much, like one of the boys when asked to clean up their Legos.

At last, he said, “I assume the pregnancy is going well enough. If it weren’t, one of my meddlesome siblings would have informed me otherwise.”

“But you don’t know for certain.”

Sebastian’s expression drooped further. “I suppose,” he said, “I could ask.”

“Oh, thank you, darling!” Careful of both his lotion-slathered feet and the babe he carried, Perry flew up and peppered Sebastian’s face with kisses. With his legs up it was a little awkward, but Sebastian helped by drawing him onto his lap and supporting the backs of his thighs while the kisses Perry gave went from innocent to amorous. “Please do. I simply must know. I can’t stand to think of poor Walter suffering all on his own.”

Everything ground to a complete stop, and Sebastian gave him a warning look that could have stopped traffic.

Perry chuckled and hastened to add, “Not that I’ll be heading out of the lair to visit with him, of course. You’ll be the one doing that. I’ll remain where it’s safe so the worst won’t come to pass. But if I know, I can send Walter a gift basket. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

Sebastian grunted in acknowledgment but didn’t otherwise comment.

“And what of Hugh?” Perry continued. Now that the moment was broken, it seemed as good a time as any to ply Sebastian for more information. “And Finch? Has anyone discovered his whereabouts? Is Hugh in good spirits despite the loss?”

Sebastian growled low in his throat. “And how do you know there’s something amiss with Hugh?”

Oh, what an oversight. Perry bit his lip. “Oh. Well. Yes. It is strange, isn’t it? I promise I haven’t been out and about, Sebastian. I’ve been here this whole time. I wish I could explain it to you, but I’m not sure you’d understand. You could say it’s an omega thing.”

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed with suspicion, but after a moment, he shook his head. “You’re safe, so it’s no matter. Hugh is fine. He was abroad the last few months chasing his omega secretary across territories both allied and enemy, but has finally come home thanks to Everard and Geoffrey.”

“Chasing?” Perry’s eyes widened. “Sebastian, what do you mean?”
