As if she can read my thoughts, her body tenses against mine. Her hands release my hair, sliding to my chest, pushing me away.

I break the kiss, confusion causing my chest to tighten.

“Stop.” Lexi’s voice is breathy, her lips swollen from my kiss. “We can’t do this.”

I’m stunned as she steps back, pushing her hands through her hair. “This isn’t right. We can’t. You’re my stepbrother and my professor.” Her big mocha eyes are filled with shame, but I see the desire brimming in them.

“Here we go with this society bullshit again.” Running my hands through my hair, I heave out a frustrated sigh. “Lexi, I know we’d need to be discreet, but—”

“Discreet?” Her voice is a high-pitched screech as she blinks rapidly, staring at me in disbelief. “Evan, this can’t happen. There is nous.”

My nostrils flare as I enter her personal space, glaring at her. “What do you mean there’s no us?” There’s a hard edge to my laughter as I throw my head back. “Oh, Lexi. So beautifully naïve.” My hands shoot out, grab her arms, and pull her against me. “Let’s get one damn thing straight. You belong to me. Every fucking inch of you. Every breath. Every heartbeat.Mine.”

Fear fills her mocha eyes before her eyes flash with anger and defiance. “Fuck you, Evan.”

“Oh, Lexi. We’ll be fucking soon. I promise you that.” Hostility is in my smile, venom in my tone when I speak. “There’s no escaping me. I always get what I want, and there’s nothing I want more thanyou.”

Although her body trembles, her chin lifts in the air. An air of bravado swirls around her as she says, “The hell we will. There’s no way I’m fuckingyou.” Her eyes rake over me disdainfully, an air of defiance swirling around her. Her chest heaves from anger as her hands clench into fists at her side. “There’s a first time for everything, Evan. You’re about to discover what it feels like to want something andnotget it.”

Over the din of the rage pounding in my ears, I hear footsteps coming down the hallway, growing closer to us. While the last thing I want to do is let her go, I release my grip on her, knowing I need to keep up appearances. I need to play the long game with her.

“Next time you disrupt my class, I’ll do more than embarrass you.” Glaring at her, frustration and rage spiral out of control inside me. “I can and will make your life hell, Lexi.”

Folding her arms over her chest, Lexi sneers at me. “Maybe I’ll go to Dr. Boyles. Or the department chair.” Flames shoot from her eyes as she bares her teeth at me. “Or even the dean.”

I match her stance, my legs wide as I stare at her beneath lowered brows. “Try it, Lexi.” Moving closer to her, my voice is an angry hiss, full of threats and promises. “Don’t forget my father is paying for your education. Both our parents trust and expect me to keep an eye on you.” I shake my head sadly, in control of myself once again. Fake sympathy is laced with venom when I speak. “I’d hate to have to tell them you’re getting into trouble already. My father will put you on notice, and that’s the only one you’ll get. Any further complaints, and you’ll be back home, living in the Whitmore mansion you seem to despise.”

She gasps, her face losing its color. “You wouldn’t.”

I back her against my desk. “Wouldn’t I?” I arch my brow, staring down at my prey. “Try me, Lexi.”

Spinning around, I calmly head to my desk and slide into my chair seconds before Dr. Boyles appears in my doorway. “Ah, Evan… and Lexi?” A puzzled look is on his face as he takes in her pale, unhappy face.

Lexi hurries over to her backpack, grabbing it from the floor and hoisting it over her shoulders. When she faces Dr. Boyles, she gives him a fake smile. “Hi, Dr. Boyles.” Turning to me, she barely meets my eyes. “I’ve gotta go.” Her chin quivers as she spins, her head lowered before she hurries out the door.

As she brushes past Dr. Boyles without another word, he turns to me, raising his brow. “Is she okay?”

I nod, getting comfortable in my chair. “She’s just having a difficult time adjusting. Remember when I told you my father is paying for her education here? Well, he’s demanding she attain a 3.0 GPA, or he’ll yank the funding, and she’ll have to move back home. It’s been her dream to attend Groveton, and, with all the changes of going from a middle-class lifestyle to this…” I spread my hands wide as he nods.

“Ah, I see. Well, if you need access to the private Psych tutoring lounge to tutor her, you know you’re welcome to it.”

I carefully keep my features under control as I nod and give him a grateful smile. “TI’ll take you up on that offer.”What a perfect way to have uninterrupted time with her on campus.

Dr. Boyles pulls out his cell phone. “Let me give you the code.”

As he recites it, I type it into my phone, already memorizing it.

Nothing will keep me from you now, Lexi.

OBSESSION

Evan

I’m fuming by the time I get home. Lexi’s rejection fucking stings. A part of me knows it’s unfair to direct so much rage her way because she doesn’t know I don’t kiss the women I’m with. A smile twists my lips. At least, not on their mouths.

I don’t know what the hell came over me. I don’t allow myself to be vulnerable. I learned that lesson a long time ago when my mom abandoned me. It hurt so goddamn bad that she took off in the middle of the night, leaving me with my cold-as-ice father.
