“Hey, Bennett,” Braydon yells, moving toward us. “I need a favor.”

Bennett and I stop, waiting until Braydon reaches us. But I don’t get a chance to hear what Braydon says before a vice-like grip wraps around my arm.

Evan fumes, smoke practically coming from his ears like in a cartoon. “We need to talk. Right fucking now.”

“Let go of me,” I hiss.

“Lexi.” His voice shakes with barely suppressed rage. “You either come with me willingly, or I hurt the boy, then throw you over my shoulder.” The promise in his eyes frightens me. “What’s it gonna be?”

I hesitate, and Evan turns to Bennett, his hand clenched into a fist.

“Okay. I’ll go. But you need to let go of my arm.” Evan stares at me a moment before releasing his hold. I turn to Bennett, putting my hand on his arm. Evan growls like a wild animal behind me, but I ignore him. “I need to talk to Professor Whitmore. I’ll see you later?”

He looks from me to Evan. “Umm… sure?”

I don’t get to say anything more because Evan grabs my arm, dragging me down the hallway to his office.

“Slow down,” I hiss. “I wasn’t kidding. These shoes are hurting my feet.”

“Shouldn’t have worn them.” His voice quakes with anger as he looks down at them, then back up at me. “Want me to carry you?”

“It’s fine. I can make it.” Tugging my arm from his grasp, I cross them over my chest. I bite my lip, pain radiating through me from his earlier behavior. What the hell does he want? Why is he talking to me now?

Once we arrive at his office, I wait for him to open the door. His gaze bores into mine as he unlocks the door, but I refuse to look at him.

Evan opens the door, gesturing for me to go inside. My gaze reluctantly meets his. All the anger, disappointment, and confusion swirl through my veins like hot lava, ready to erupt.

Stomping inside his office, I whirl around when he closes the door. “I don’t know what’s so fucking important, but—”

“I shouldn’t have ignored you in class.”

“You’re damn right. You shouldn’t have,” I seethe, rage and hurt blanketing me as I stare at him. “Look, you got what you wanted. It was fun while it lasted. I get it.”

I’m a damned liar. I don’t get it at all.

“Is that what you think I did?” He’s in front of me, his warm, amber scent making my head spin.

I stare at his shoes, unable to say a word. Unable to look at him, fearing I’ll burst into sobs as soon as I do.

“Lexi.” A finger goes beneath my chin. “Trust me, I didn’t just fuck you and dump you.”

A tear spills down my cheek, then another. “Sure feels like it.” I step back out of his reach. My hand goes through my hair. “I’m so fucking stupid.”

Evan narrows his eyes, staring at me from beneath lowered brows. “That’snotwhat happened, and you’re not fucking stupid. Don’t ever say that about yourself again.” He’s in my space again. I back against his desk and he advances with me. His hands cup my face, thumbs wiping away my tears. “Don’t ever insult yourself like that again, Lexi. I don’t like it.” Exhaling a shuddering breath, there’s a vulnerability in his smokey eyes. “Not when you’re everything to me, Lexi. The sun and moon, lighting up my skies, lighting my way in the darkness.”

I stare at him in surprise, softening from his words.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have acted that way. I took my issues out on you.”

Some of my anger dissipates as I stare at him.Did Evan Whitmore just apologize to me?

“Hello, Evan,” Jenna’s voice purrs from behind us. “Am I interrupting?”

Evan closes his eyes and turns around. “Yes,” he snaps.

I slide out from between him and the desk. “No. I was leaving.” I don’t look at Evan. I flee before the tears roll, confusion crashing through me like angry waves.

I don’t understand his hot and cold behavior. But I hit my breaking point when Jenna stood in his office like she owned the place.
