I couldn’t handle Evan going to jail. In the three weeks that we’ve known one another, I’ve come to depend on him entirely too much. The thought of him not being around sends me into a panic, followed by a deep depression.

I’ll just have to figure out how to deal with Shane on my own.

* * *

By the time class is over, I’m a nervous wreck from reliving what happened with Shane. In a daze, I walk out of the classroom and make it halfway down the hall before I realize I forgot my backpack.

Racing back to the room, I grab my backpack, then hurry out the door. It’s creepy with no one around.

Feeling a stare boring into my back, I turn around, expecting to see Shane. Instead, there’s someone and standing at the other end of the hallway, clad in a Ghostface mask and costume.

Oh my God. What if it is Shane.

My flight response kicks in, and I flee. My breathing is quick and shallow when I hear his footsteps pounding down the hallway behind me.

Pushing through the stairway doors, my hand grips the banister as I run down the stairs, heading for Evan’s office. He has office hours until 9:00 pm tonight.

Please let him still be there. If he left early, I don’t know what I’ll do.

My heart races as I push through the doors, my leg and arm muscles pumping. Hope blossoms inside my chest, easing the heavy weight of the panic coursing inside me when I spot his open door, light from inside his office spilling into the hallway.

I’m sweating profusely as I race inside, only to find his office empty.

Oh, fuck. No.

I stare at his empty chair in disbelief. My gaze darts around his office, wondering where he is.

A noise behind me startles me. I grab the first thing I see on Evan’s desk—a stapler—and whip around, intending to throw or hit the guy in the Ghostface mask.

But it’s Evan.

“Oh, thank God.” Dropping the stapler, tears spill down my cheeks as I throw myself into his arms.

“Lexi.” His arms tighten around me as I cling to him, sobbing into his shirt. My body sags with relief, knowing I’m safe.

Pulling back slightly, concern shines in his smoky irises. “What the hell happened, sweetie?”

I suck in a breath, amazed that I have any tears remaining after crying in the bathroom earlier. As soon as I’m composed enough to speak, I blurt out, “Ghostface was chasing me.”

Evan’s brows draw together as he stares at me in stunned silence. “Ghostface? Like the masked man in the movie, “Scream?” That Ghostface?”

I nod. “More like the Halloween costume. I forgot my backpack and had to run back to the classroom to retrieve it. After I grabbed it, I walked down the hallway. It felt like someone was watching me. I turned around… And there he was. At the end of the hallway. He chased me…” I hiccup, cutting off my words.

“You’re safe now, bellissima.” Evan pulls me against his chest, his head turned toward the doorway. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

I believe those words wholeheartedly.

Evan holds my hand as he walks with me to the back entrance of the building. “Why don’t you ride with me tonight? We can pick up your car tomorrow.”

I shiver as I look out the window into the darkness. “Yes. I like that idea.”

Wrapping an arm around me, Evan pulls me against his side, kissing the top of my head. “I’m here, sweetheart. You’re safe.”

I tilt my head up to his. “I know. I’m so damn grateful are.”

“Let’s make a deal. I’ll meet you after your class on Wednesday nights and follow or drive you home.”

“It’s a deal.”
