Pushing the door open, Evan releases me, allowing me to step out first. He exits behind me, his arm winding around my shoulders again. I snuggle into him, goosebumps prickling my skin. A sense of uneasiness creeps over my body as though we’re still in danger.

We descend the steps and walk along the sidewalk when I spot Ghostface. Jerking to a stop, I point. “Oh, God. There he is.”

Evan’s hands tighten into fists. “That fucker.”

Before I can react, Evan’s arm is gone, and so is he. His shoes pound against the pavement, then the grass, as he barrels toward Ghostface. The masked man turns, heading in the opposite direction. When he did, I saw the light glinting off the silver blade of the knife.

“Oh, fuck. No, Evan. Stop.” I sprint after him, my heart pounding.

Luckily, Evan realizes I’m chasing him. He stops, whipping around, his brows lowered. “Lexi. What are you doing?”

“He has… A knife.” I’m gasping for air as I reach him. “Please, let’s go to your car and get outta here. We can call campus police once we’re inside your car.”

Evan studies my face, then turns his head in the direction Ghostface ran before looking back at me. “Okay, bellissima. Let’s go.” Winding my hand firmly in his, Evan’s gaze darts around as he leads me to the parking lot where his car is parked. He holds the door open, then hurries to the driver’s side, slipping inside.

Once he’s heading out of the parking lot, I finally relax. The sigh I release draws his attention.

He weaves his fingers around mine, placing them on his gearshift. “You okay?”

I meet his eyes and nod. “I am now.”

A STUNNING REVELATION

Evan

Lexi’s body trembles in the passenger seat. Wrinkling my brow, I analyze her, worry coursing through me. She was relaxed once I drove out of the parking not, but now, she’s even more uptight, as though something else is bothering her.

“What’s up, bellissima?” My hand slides to her bare thigh, rubbing over it. “There’s something you aren’t telling me, isn’t there?” I pull into a parking space in front of our apartment building and cut the engine.

“Yes. I’ll tell you inside, okay?”

I squeeze her thigh. “Okay.”

Jumping out of the car, I run around and lift her off her feet. Lexi’s giggle warms my heart. “Evan, what are you doing?”

“Saving my damsel in distress.” I jog toward the front door with her in my arms, making her laugh harder. The sound makes me feel light, weightless even.

Carefully balancing her, I unlock the door and carry her inside, kicking it shut behind me. I carry her to the couch, getting her comfortable and wrapping a blanket around her.

Her eyes are misty as she stops me, her hand gripping my arm. “I haven’t been cared for like this in a long time. You’re spoiling me.”

My skin hums from her touch. Every nerve is on fire, scorching me from within. “You deserve to be spoiled, Lex.”

She cocks her head, a wistful expression on her face. “My Gram used to call me Lex. I usually don’t let anyone call me that… But you can.”

My heart stutters, squeezing inside my chest as I stare into her eyes.

Regret knots my stomach. I was wrong. So fucking wrong about Lexi. I thought she was scheming to take my father’s money. But there’s not a malicious bone in Lexi’s body to pull off something like that. Everything she’s shown me is the truth.

God, I can’t ever tell her what I thought. It would crush her.

I clear my throat, still too overwhelmed to speak. Lexi leans forward, pressing her pillowy lips against mine, taking my breath away. Her kiss is sweeter than honey and her touch as light as a feather drifting across my face.

Trent’s right. There’s no way in hell I can ever walk away from her.

For her sake, I hope like hell my darkness won’t extinguish her light.
