Lexi crawls into my lap, sitting on my hard dick. She whimpers before biting her lip, her hands on my shoulders.

“Before I get carried away, I need to say this.” She takes a deep breath, and on the exhale, she blurts out, “Someone from my past is on Groveton campus. I bumped into him tonight before class.”

What? Why the hell didn’t I hear this exchange?

Then I remembered Trent was in my office at that time, and we were scheming, so I temporarily turned the sound off so I wouldn’t be distracted.

“His name is Shane Reynolds. We went to high school together. He was a popular quarterback while I was a nobody.” Lexi stares at my shirt, her cheeks flushing from embarrassment.

My finger moves beneath her chin, lifting it so her mocha eyes lock with mine. “You could never be a nobody, Lexi. You’re everything.”

Tears fill her eyes. “T-Thank you, Evan.”

I shake my head. “There’s no need to thank me. You’re amazing, Lexi.” I realize how deeply I’ve fallen for this woman in such a short time. Everything I’ve been resisting because of the fear of being hurt is now all I want with her.

“Although you think that, the students at Filmore High didn’t think so. Sure, I had a few close friends, but I wasn’t what anyone would call popular. Most of that was because my Gram was sick from cancer, so instead of hanging out with my friends, I stayed home with her. But it’s what I wanted. My Gram was a special lady, and I loved being around her.”

My hand squeezes her waist. “That’s sweet that you wanted to spend time with her.”

“Someday, I’ll tell you the stories of our fun together. But right now…” Her face clouds. “I need to get the bad stuff out.”

“I’m listening, bellissima. I’m here all night… and all day.”

The way she’s looking at me with those soft eyes is like a fishing line reeling me in. I never want her to stop looking at me the way she is now.

What is happening to me? I’m not soft or romantic. I don’t believe in such ridiculous notions.

At least, I didn’t. Not until Lexi.

“My junior year of high school, I crashed into Shane in the hallway because I was late for class. The books in my arms went flying, as did my cell phone. I broke down and cried because everything was going so terribly wrong. My Gram was getting sicker and refusing to get checked out, I was distracted in school, and my grades were slipping, and all my friends were disappearing because I never had time for them anymore.”

Ahh. That’s why her grades and GPA dipped in her junior and senior years of high school.

“I’ll spare you the boring details, but suffice it to say, when Shane was kind and began showering me with attention, I ate it up. I ignored the red flags, such as his excuses about why he couldn’t take me out to the movies or for dinner. I mean, I was busy with Gram, anyway. I was just grateful for his attention, which was a mistake.”

She hangs her head in shame, and anger floods me. I have all kinds of theories about what he did, and I’d like to kill him with my bare hands. I remain quiet, fearful that if I explode, she won’t tell me what happened.

“A month and a half later, Shane invited me to a football game and a party afterward. It was the first time we’d be in public together and the thought of being on his arm at the party was thrilling. I worried about leaving Gram home alone since Mom was away at a conference, but she insisted I go.”

I stroke her back, dread filling me from the look on her face.

“Shane ignored me until after the game. Everyone had left for the party. He started getting handsy outside the locker room. I pushed him off and told him we should get to the party. He seemed angry, but then it disappeared as he started laying it on thick about how much he liked me and wanted to touch me, etc. I was uneasy because I was a….”

“Virgin.”

She nods, her gaze lifting to mine. “I hope the story doesn’t change your opinion of me.”

I lean my forehead against hers. Staring deeply in her eyes, utmost conviction fills me. There’s nothing that could change the way I feel about her. “Never, Lexi. I know who you are. I know your heart. And whatever happened, I know he’s at fault.”

Lexi blinks rapidly, as though to keep the tears from falling. “You barely know me, yet you have more faith in me than my own mother. And my friends… They believed Shane over me.”

I cup her face in my hands. “I know you, Lexi. Better than you think.”Considering how much I’ve stalked you without your knowledge or consent, I know more than I should. Hell, I’ve even started drinking the same coffee to understand you better.“Tell me what happened.”

She nods, sniffing. “The night of the party, Shane got drunk. He acted like a completely different person. When I refused to go upstairs with him, knowing he wanted sex, he became furious. That should have been a warning sign, but I was naïve.”

In retaliation, Shane ended up flirting with two of the most beautiful and popular girls in school. I couldn’t take it and caught a ride home with my friend, Lauren.”

Lexi blows out a breath. “Lauren thought I was upset that Shane was flirting with other girls, which I was. But when I told her the rest of the story, she blamed me for being a tease. Lauren didn’t understand why I was a junior in high school and still a virgin.”
