Lexi trembles like a leaf beside me, clinging to my hand as she stares at her stepfather, all the color draining from her face.
“Hello, Evan. Lexi.” His cold gaze rakes over our joined hands, the way we lean against one another suggesting much more than a sibling relationship. “I see the two of you are getting along quite well.” His voice is laced with sarcasm.
“We are.” I huff out a breath before dropping the truth. “I’m in love with Lexi.”
She blinks rapidly, surprise in her eyes as she gazes up at me.
“I can see that.” My father’s lips twist in disgust. “Huntley and his father contacted me. Had a very interesting conversation about what has been happening on campus.”
I snort. “Is any of it the truth?”
My father’s eyes narrow, locking on our joined hands. “One part of it certainly is.”
I stare at him defiantly, not saying a word.
“Look, Evan. I’m here to make a deal.”
“I figured as much. What is it?”
“You and Lexi have a choice. Either you end this madness you two have for one another. Lexi moves out, and I continue paying for your education and all other expenses. Or you refuse, and beginning next semester, I strip all funding from both of you. In addition, you will no longer be welcome at the Whitmore Estate.”
Before I can open my mouth, Lexi’s strong voice fills the night air. “I love Evan. I’mnotgiving him up.” Her chin is raised, defiance in her expression. “I’m never giving him up.” Her eyes turn to mine, softening and full of so much love, she leaves me breathless.
She chose me. There was no hesitation as she gave up everything without batting an eye.
I kiss the top of her head, wrapping my arms around her. She sighs, tilting her head to mine.
My father shakes his head, his lip curled in disgust. “Foolish. I tried my best, but you’re too much like your mother.”
His words make my body tense. I quiver as I glare at him, fury rolling through my veins. “Youwere the one who chased my mom away.Youstarted this feud when you fucked Huntley’s mother, ending his parent’s marriage.”
My father glares at me, his hands clenched into fists at his side. “There’s one final thing I’ll do before I cut the two of you from my life. I’ll prevent the scandal you created when you decided to date your stepsister from going public.”
“Don’t bother,” I sneer. “It’s already been handled by my friends.”
Luca, Zayne, Jaxson, Ryker and Devyn, and Trent and Sophia gather around us, staring at my father with disgust.
My father shakes his head before taking two steps back. “You’re out of my life.” His eyes flick to Lexi. “And you won’t ever see your mother again.”
Lexi snorts. “Good riddance.” She leans up on her tiptoes. “I already have everything I need.” She smiles, her fingers stroking the stubble on my face. “Evan is my home.”
Then she plants her lips on mine, and the world disappears.

Istand beside Evan, still shaking from what transpired with Preston. He’s not legally my stepfather since he never adopted me, and now he’s even less to me.
But having to leave Groveton and, especially, the apartment I share with Evan has me feeling like I could cry and vomit.
“Hey.” Devyn puts a hand on my shoulder. “I know that was rough.” A brittle laugh comes from her, floating on the night air. “Ryker is my stepbrother, so we went through something similar. Our parents disowned us after we told them.” She holds out her hand, the diamond ring twinkling beneath the festive lights we’re standing under. Her eyes move to Ryker. As if he feels her stare, his gaze moves from Evan to her, and he gives her a smile and wink before returning his attention to Evan.
“Worth it,” Devyn says with a laugh. “Ryker’s my world.” She leans closer. “He put a Jason hockey mask on and snuck into my RV. I had no idea it was him because he wouldn’t speak, and obviously, I’d never had sex with him until then.” The blush covering her cheeks enhances her beauty.
Surprised, I turn to her. “You have a mask kink, too?”
