We both watched as Dan guided Elspeth towards a small group of his friends and I marvelled at just how easily she’d settled into a world that wasn’t hers. In the space of fifteen minutes, I learned one of the most valuable lessons in life: never presume you know someone through and through. And rejoice in that. Because the less you truly know someone, the more they will surprise you.

And there’s nothing in life quite like a surprise.

A tongue curled around my ear lobe and a tingle shuddered my spine. I wrapped my palm around the precious stone on my finger and looked up into eyes that were darker than dampened ash.

His voice rumbled across the surface of my skin. “Times up.”

I let the light from my diamond bounce off his sharp cheekbone and slowly licked my lips.

“Let the fun begin.”
