“I think I need to pump some iron or chop some wood because I’ve come over all emotional.” Fraser pretends to dab his eyes, making everyone giggle.

“Oh my God, what is wrong with you two? Can you not try to be normal for once?” I look at Hunter and Fraser and they shake their heads.

“We’ll give you two a minute.” Eva takes Pom-pom’s lead from Violet’s hand.

They all start chatting among themselves and coo over Pom-pom.

I surround Violet with my body, almost as if I’m protecting her from them. I say in her ear, “I should have told you they were coming. I’m sorry. But family freaks you out and my one is, well, a lot to get used to. They have enormous personalities and collectively they are, the only word for it is, extra.”

She smirks. “Oh, I don’t know; your wife seems nice.”

I squeeze her waist. “She’s the same age as you.”

“A little heads-up on that would have been good,” she whispers. “What’s the age gap between your dad and Eva?”

We lean out of our hug.

“Fourteen years. Your dad and mine have something in common after all. They both like younger women, it would appear.” She gazes at my family.

“So when you said you had brothers and a sister, I thought they were older.”

“If I was to tell you my sister is almost three decades younger than me, it would sound weird, but when you see my dad, Eva, and the kids together, it’s not. It was easier to show you than tell you.”

“That makes sense. They look incredibly happy together.”

I bring her up to speed. “Hamish and Archie are from Eva’s first marriage, but the boys don’t see their father. And Thea is my dad and Eva’s.”

“Blended family.” She continues to gaze at them in wonder. “So Eva has two sisters?”

“She’s a triplet. The shorter one is Eden and she is married to American pro golfer Hunter King and they have triplet boys. Lewis, Lachlan, and Lennox.”

“Oh my God. I knew I recognized him, and is that? No way, is that Fraser Farmer? He used to live here, but he’s Scottish, isn’t he? And he’s a pro golfer? Wow, you have a famous family.”

“Yeah. He's married to Ella now, Eva’s other sister, and they have a little boy called Mason.”

“I’ve made such a fool of myself in front of them all.”

“No, you didn’t. It was very Violet.” She hides her face in my chest and I hold on to her tighter. “I would never cheat on you, Petal. Never.”

“I’m sorry I doubted you,” she says, her words muffled.

I kiss the top of her head. “The reason we have never stayed over at the hotel is because your whole life is at your house. It’s your home. Your clothes, office, files, stationery cabinet.” She laughs. “Me, I am currently living out of a suitcase, plus you have Pom-pom and you live near the beach. It made sense for me to stay over at your place.”

“It was a silly thing to say.”

“It wasn’t. It’s okay to have doubts. You haven’t been here and we have only been dating for thirty days. Have you been counting?”

“Maybe,” she mumbles into my chest as if she’s embarrassed.

“We’ll chat later about the distance thing, okay? We will work it out.”

“I’d like that.” She lifts her head and kisses me. I hope we can.

“Your family looks like blond goddesses and Greek gods, all of them,” she says a little too loudly and they all stop chatting.

I thread my fingers into Violet’s and turn to the people I love most in the world.

“You’re going to fit right in,” Eva says as she passes Thea to Eden and walks our way, pulling Violet into a genuine embrace.
