“I need to call him.” I pull my phone out of my purse and hit his number.

“He wouldn't speak to you, even if he could, but he’ll be four hours into his flight by now.” He’s barely holding it together, keeping his raw emotion in check. “He’s not talking to me either. Or anyone. He’s completely shut down.”

My legs go from beneath me and Eva has to hold me up. “Let’s get you up to our room,” she coos.

The elevator ride is a blur. The only thing I remember are two delicate, warm arms wrapped around me.

“Violet.” Knox rouses me to shake me out of my anguished thoughts.

I look around suddenly, aware of my surroundings. We’re in their hotel suite.

When did I sit on the sofa?

Knox is sitting on the coffee table in front of me, his hands clasped around mine.

“Are you okay, sweetheart?”

“I don’t know,” I answer honestly.

Knox squeezes my clasped hands. “I need you to listen to me. I need you to concentrate, and then I want to know everything about you and Lincoln.”

“Why?” He left. He left without saying goodbye and now his dad wants me to relive our time together for what, to torment me more?

“Because I want to fix this, that’s why. I have to fix this for my boy.”

“How can you fix this? He left me.” I can’t even cry. My body has gone into emotional shock. “What did he say to you?”

Knox clears his throat. “He said he didn’t think it was a good idea for you two to be together anymore because it would cause too much heartbreak for you both in the long term. He also mentioned that you shouldn’t be visiting Scotland like you planned in a few weeks’ time either.”

“Could he not have told me that himself? He’s a coward.” I grit my teeth as irritation and anger take hold.

“Please don’t be mad at him. He’s hurting.”

“He’s hurting?” I spit. The room spins around me. “And what about me? Oh God, I’m so dizzy.”

“Have some water.” Eva passes me a drink. I didn’t even realize she was sitting beside me.

I take a deep breath and take some cool sips.

“My chest hurts.” I start wheezing. “Oh, I don't feel good.” I can’t catch my breath as I try to suck air into my lungs.

“She’s having a panic attack,” Eva’s words sound jumbled, then her face comes into view.

Loud ringing in my ears makes my eardrums feel like they are on fire and the tightness across my chest becomes unbearable. My heart is racing faster than a Formula One car toward the finish line. I think I’m having a heart attack. Or it’s my heart breaking into a million pieces because I’m certain someone has punctured my heart with a razor-sharp ice pick.

Whatever it is, I want the room to stop spinning.

Eva is speaking to me, but I can’t hear her.

She’s pointing at her mouth, nodding, urging me to follow her. I think she’s trying to tell me something with her hands as she moves her hand back and forth from her mouth and back again.

I don’t know how long I watch her, but I hear her melodic, soft voice again. “You’re doing great, Violet. In and out. From your stomach, not your chest. In for five… and out, and again.”

I take a deep breath in.

“There you go.” Eva places her hand on my forehead. “You’re so hot.”

I feel sticky.
