“I’m Violet. Lincoln’s girlfriend.”

She keeps saying girlfriend, and it warms my heart up every time.

“Girlfriend?” Harriet makes a noise like she has a fishbone stuck in the back of her throat. “You’ve changed, Lincoln. Lincoln has never had a girlfriend before.”

As sharp as a pin, Violet counters, “That’s because he never found anyone who was his type before or who loves him the way I can. He needed a woman, not a girl.”

She just told everyone she loves me and it’s not something we’ve discussed at all or said to each other since she arrived back in my life.

It’s only been a few days and I feel like she’s never not been here.

“So you met when you were traveling, Lincoln?”

Violet butts in. “Yes, sweetheart, he did. My accent sort of gives it away.” She draws out her American accent.

Violet doesn’t seem to be jealous. I think she’s worked out that she was a notch in my bedpost, but she’s standing strong, knowing full well that this girl is no match for her.

Violet is better than any other woman I have ever met.

“Right. Well, I’ll be off then. It was nice to meet you, Violet. When are you leaving?”

“Oh, I’m not. I’m working for Lincoln’s father on a huge new project as an operations manager. You’ll see me around.” Harriet’s mouth hits the floor.

“I’m here to stay.” Violet tucks herself closer into my side and I don’t know why I chose this moment to kiss her, but on impulse I do.

She’s here to stay and has seamlessly embedded herself into my life.

She fits in.

The moon could fall out of the sky right now as I lose myself in her.

Her soft lips on mine, she holds the back of my neck, pulling me to her. She pushes my mouth open, with her tongue and slides it into my mouth, and I tentatively twist my tongue around hers.

I’ve never been one to kiss in public before, never been one to kiss a girl in front of my friends. But I don’t care. I want to pour my love into this woman who is driving me crazy with her deep kiss and tongue fucking she is currently giving me.

Our breathing picks uppace and I don’t know how long we kiss for out in the street for all to see, but I can’t seem to care; I want to show everyone she is mine.

I claim her mouth as her tongue assaults me and I know I need to stop being a prick and appreciate this kindhearted woman that has given up her life to be with me. Because she just told everyone she’s here to stay.

When we stop kissing, I look into her big eyes. “I’m sorry. I kind of forgot where we were.”

“I don’t mind.”

We look around us and everyone has gone home.

“That’s one way to get everyone to leave.” Violet rests her hand on my chest. “Let’s remember to kiss if we ever have anyone in our house we don’t like, but we’re too polite to ask them to go.”

Our house.

“Great idea. Let’s go home.”

I thread my fingers through hers.

Even my walk has a sudden cheerfulness about it as we head off to catch a cab home.

I feel slightly more human tonight.
