My dad rolls his eyes.

Eva drapes her arms around my dad’s neck from behind. “You look very dashing, Lincoln. Who is the lucky lady?”

“Her name is Violet.”

“That’s a pretty name,” she coos.

“She is really pretty. Beautiful.” I can feel my entire face lighting up.

“Oh, crap.” Eva smiles.

“Yup, I know that look,” my dad speaks in code to Eva.

“What look?” I’m confused.

“The ‘she’s the one’ look.” Eva grins.

“Okay, mom. Whatever.”

“Don’t call me mom. It’s weird when my high school friend calls me mom.” She scrunches her nose up.

She’s right; it is still weird that my high school friend is married to my dad. Eva is fourteen years younger than my father, but they couldn’t be more perfect for one another. She was three years ahead of me in high school, but we always ended up at the same beach parties when we were growing up, so we know each other very well.

Castleview Cove is a little town, where everyone knows everyone. Growing up, it never mattered what year at school you were in, we all just gelled and hung out together.

Before my dad started dating Eva, I thought she was beautiful and told her so. That makes me cringe as I think about my actions and words. She is stunning. I still think that, and I can see why my dad fell in love with her, but she was right when she told me we weren’t meant for each other. She was meant for my dad in every way, and I love her for loving my father the way she does.

“Sorry, Eva. She can’t be ‘the one.’” I frown. These two have had too much wine tonight. “I’m only here for six more weeks.” Long-distance relationships sound impossible. “She works for her family business here in California as an operations manager. She’s pretty switched on. Have you heard of West Oracle Corporations, Dad?”

“Yeah. US based. Fortune 500 company. Run by a guy named Anthony West if my memory serves me correctly.”

“I met him today.”

“Wow. Must be serious if she’s introducing you to her father.” He winks at me.

Ah, so here’s the thing, I haven’t actually told my father I am working a full-time job here in California. Helping and volunteering, yes. Working, no.

I nod my head.

“What’s she like?” Eva’s eyes sparkle.

I run my hands down the thighs of my newly purchased black jeans. “She’s brunette.”

“Wow, not blond?” my father calls me out.

I ignore him and carry on. “Golden-brown eyes. Beautiful. Smart. She has no idea how funny she is. I really like her.”

“Oh boy. Definitely smitten.” Eva teases me, then she hiccups. “I need my bed.”

“Oh goodie. I can’t wait.” My father smiles into the camera.

“Not now, Knox.” She hiccups again.

I stick my fingers in my mouth and fake gag. “I don’t need to hear this. Go, you two. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

My dad grabs Eva’s hand and kisses her wedding ring. I love how Eva has changed my dad. He’s so in love with her. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. I want that for me too.

“Night, Linc. Enjoy your date.” My dad waves me off.
