“And he is?”

“My boyfriend?”

“Was that a question or a definite answer, Letty?”

Oh, please stop embarrassing me, Dad. “Definite answer.” I place the now-abandoned gym plans on the large wooden table beside me.

“You sure?”

“Oh, behave.” On swift feet, I move toward him and throw my arms around his waist. “Morning, Mr. Grumpy.” His mood changes in a heartbeat. He may be a big gruff bear with his workers, but with me he’s a big soft-hearted soul.

He kisses the top of my head. “Morning, Letty.” He then whispers in my ear, “Boyfriend?”

I pinch his side. “Don’t embarrass me, Dad.” I pull out of our hug. “Lincoln, this is my father, Anthony West. Dad, this is Lincoln. My new boyfriend.”

Lincoln strides forward with an outstretched hand. “Pleased to meet you, Mr. West.” My father shakes his hand firmly.

My dad frowns. “Scottish? I recognize that accent. Did I not meet you last week at the team building day?”

“You did. I don’t work for S&M Gyms anymore. Your daughter fired me.”

“She what?”

“She fired me. I was only on a temporary contract, but if we want to have a relationship together, I can't work for the gym. Company policy.”

He hardly put up a fight. Although I think my boob flash swayed his decision.

A deep laugh fills my father’s chest. “Oh boy, she must really like you then.” His eyebrows shoot up. “And you must be a glutton for punishment or have balls of steel to stick around after she fired you.” My father shakes his hand firmly. “Although you Scots are brave, wearing kilts in the cold weather across the pond.” My dad turns to me. “You fired him? This may be the funniest thing I have ever heard you do, Letty. Also, the silliest.” He frowns at me. I know my father well enough to know what he’s thinking—employee sexual harassment lawsuit.

I shake my head to let him know it’s all fine.

Unaware of our unspoken conversation, Lincoln shoots back, “Oh no, when she fell over in the office last week. That was the funniest thing I've ever seen.”

“You fell last week? Again? You seriously need to think about wearing flat pumps, Letty. Did you hurt yourself?” His voice is full of concern.

“I’m fine.” I swipe my hand through the air, brushing it off.

“Did you do that too?” My dad points to Lincoln’s cut forehead but asks me. He knows me so well.

“Yes.”

“No.”

Lincoln and I both say the opposite at the same time.

“Kinda.” I twiddle my thumbs and Lincoln snorts.

My dad shakes his head. “I’m sorry I asked.”

“You really do not want to know how it happened.” Lincoln folds his arms across his chest.

I feel myself turning scarlet. “You really don’t.” I close my eyes. Change the subject, Violet. “So, did you hear all of that? What Lincoln was saying about the plans and layout?”

“Yes, but how did this happen? You are usually on the ball.” My dad sifts through the plans on top of the table. “I can see what you mean, Lincoln. Is this a new firm we are using?”

“Yes, but they reassured me they understood the project and our vision.”

I go through a few pointers with my dad and Lincoln.
