“Besides Joseph. Now there is a man who needs a vacation and someone to spend it with.”

I don’t want to end up like Joseph. That man has no life.

I’m unaware how my dad will take this, but I say it, anyway. “Since meeting Lincoln, he’s made me realize I don’t have much of a life. He introduced me to all these new places in town I never knew existed. I realized I’m not living. All I do is work. How on earth could I ever consider having a family? Not that I am saying I’m getting married and starting a family today or anything…”

“Thank goodness for that; I’m still too young to be a grandfather.”

He makes me laugh.

“But I’m not exactly getting any younger though, Dad. My biological clock is ticking. Even if I had a family, where would they fit in?” It’s a rhetorical question. “And if I do move to a new position, I don't want to work around the clock. Yes, I want a new challenge, but I also need balance.” I chew my lip. “I’ve also decided, since I’m the only manager without one, I need an assistant.”

“Finally!” He holds his hands up to the heavens.

“Stop it.” I swat his shoulder playfully.

“Have you given any thought as to what you would like to do or what department you would like to work in?” He looks up at me with hopeful eyes.

“Yes, actually. You know the cosmetics brand you purchased?”

“Nkd by Nature?”

“Yes.”

“I should have told you, Violet, but I’m actually selling it. Negotiations are already underway.”

Oh, well, isn’t that just peachy?

“Right.” That's that then.

“Anywhere else?”

“Nope.”

“Okay, well, give it some thought and let’s have dinner after all the gym sites are finished.” He points back at the gym. “Then you are going to go on vacation, young lady. No arguments. And when you come back, you can move to whichever department you want.”

Trying to stay positive, I focus on vacation. “Sounds good,” I say with a half-heavy heart. I really wanted to work for Nkd by Nature. I need something, anything, to break up the monotony of my current role. The other half of my heart sighs with relief; I’m finally going to have a vacation for the first time in years. Except who will I go with if Lincoln is gone?

Maybe I should spend it overseas. I can do that as my passport is up to date, or there is always Hawaii; I’ve always wanted to go, or perhaps Cancun. Riviera Maya is supposed to be incredible. I could always surprise Lincoln in Scotland. Forget that. No one ever comes back from a British holiday and says the weather was great. I’m not sure my Californian bones would survive the cold.

And would Lincoln mind if I visited him?

I’m jumping the gun.

It’s only been a week since we met. Is it really only a week? It seems longer.

“Violet!”

My father’s voice makes me jump. “Sorry. What were you saying?”

“We’re not expecting a lawsuit, are we?”

I screw up my face in confusion.

“With Lincoln!” my dad blurts out.

“Oh God, no.”

“You fired him?” He shakes his head again in amusement. “He must like you if he stuck around.”
