They just what?

Ran out for coffee when they promised someone would be with me at all times?

Had an emergency too dire to leave a fucking note?

My belly cramps.

I start to sweat.

No wonder I didn’t spike last night.

I’m spiking now.

Already halfway in the nest, I trip up the steps to the big bed, burrow deep in blankets, and curl into a ball.

I rock back and forth.

Need to call Catherine. Get Juan Pablo here, stat. Review all those offers.

Instead, I hug a pillow and squeeze my eyes shut.

Knew this was coming.

Knew this would happen.

I’m not sure how long I rock.

Eventually, I hear a noise that has me peeking warily out of the blankets, cursing. Because for the first time in forever, I walked out of my room without a blade.

Thought I was safe.

“Lilah? Lilah?” Orion’s voice echoes down the hall. He crashes into the nest, gripping his heart when he finally spots me, only my eyes poking from the massive pile of blankets.

I whine.

“Oh, shit.” His hot whisper lifts to a frantic shout. “Guys!”

He vaults the steps, whipping off blankets to get to me. I ooze into his arms.

“Thought you left,” I say woodenly.

“Never, little bear.” He smooths my hair, pulling my head against his hammering heart. “Fucking never.”

Footsteps thump the carpet.

The alphas bust in, one, two, three, four, all fighting to be first through the door. Finn throws elbows, popping out first and skips the steps, fucking high-jumping into the nest.

“Everything went dark.” Finn peels me out of Orion’s clinging fingers as the others pile into the nest.

Atlas strokes my back, Hunter purrs like a motorboat, and Jett hooks one finger in my bracelet and the other in the ring of the collar I can’t believe he didn’t rip off the second he got sober.

Under their touches and whispers and soft, stroking hands, I finally shudder, brain coming down from that high, panicked place.

“You didn’t leave?” I ask, just to be sure. “Where did you go?”

Orion stops kissing my fingers, mumbling into my hand. “I’m so sorry. Just took the elevator up to grab food. The guys were all on the way back in. Didn’t want to wake you when you were passed out. I texted.”

“Don’t know where I left my phone,” I mumble into Atlas’s chest. “Panicked.”
