JJ hangs up the phone and lifts me into his arms.
He carries me past a gaping Alice. Sweating, I shoot her an embarrassed wave. “Cancel my appointments?”
“Have fun.” She waves me out.
JJ carries me to his car while I dial Hunter.
“Lilah? Are you—”
“Need you home.” My voice is scratchy, head already full of fuzz.
“What happened?”
“Heat.”
“Orion already—”
“Mine.”
Hunter gulps. “You’re both…”
“We synced.”
Finn whoops in the background.
“On our way.” Hunter’s brakes screech just as JJ’s lowering me into his passenger seat.
He kneels to snap my buckle, placing a soft palm on my stomach. “We’ll take care of you.”
“I know.” An unstoppable smile slips free.
I’m itching to burrow in my nest. To be safe in the dark.
But at the same time, I’m weirdly lazy.
No panic. No fear.
