Molten pain and the ping of a phone drag me back to reality before I can finish tearing the scab.

Hikaru pulls out his cell. “Shit. Warned her not to go out.”

“What?” Atlas snarls.

“911,” my father says. “Lilah’s being hassled at an event. The Braun Pack.”

“Where?” Hunter’s bark is jumper-cables—sharp and so dominant, it sizzles away my shadows.

“Lounge. Front of campus.”

My feet are already moving.

I don’t hope to bond Lilah.

Never deserved her and never will. I can’t be an alpha. Can’t protect or nurture or love.

But I finally found a target for my hate.

Braun Pack.

They’re not Redfangs, but they do business with the cartel.

I have a whole dossier on Artur.

I’ll have his liver if he looks at Lilah.

Because I may be weak. Useless. A wretched fucking monster. But I can at least be the monster who protects her.

We dash through the door.

Atlas stutter-steps in the hall. “Orion, stay—”

“Fuck off.” Orion’s first out the building. “And catch up.”

He’s our fastest sprinter, but I’m not far behind.

I need to run so fast my demons can’t follow.

Blurring through the night, we bull through the guard checkpoint. We’re close to the lounge.

But when we hit the location, the pale-faced hostess points into the night. “They chased her that way!”

We rush through the landscaping, and in the distance, movement flashes.

Lilah darting through a patch of bushes.

She’s a shooting star, her dark dress glittering in the moonlight.

Chased.

I spot four alphas, the rest hidden in trees.

“Keep one alive,” Atlas snarls.

I’m good at keeping them alive.

I’ll keep them alive for a very, very long time and make them suffer for profaning her.
