I spot my target.

A slow, bulky alpha at the back of the pack.

Going to destroy him, Artur, all of them.

Then, when Lilac is safe, when she dishes out the punishment I so deeply deserve, it’ll be my turn to be destroyed.

NINE

LILAH

The wolves are chasing.

Panting, I dart through the landscaping, ducking between ornamental trees.

If I cut across the open grass, I can reach the gate to the inner campus, but I turn in the opposite direction.

Can’t trust security.

The way tonight’s going, they probably already cashed the Brauns’ check.

I run for the pond.

Water’s the only place I’m safe.

Because maybe I can’t outrun them, but there’s no way they can fish me out of that murky pond water. I’ll drown them like a freaking kelpie.

Footfalls pound closer. I squeeze my knife, ready to stab someone in the fucking jugular.

They won’t take me alive.

The alpha’s so close I choke on his scent.

A nasty combo of mint and banana.

I throw myself into running ’til my lungs burn, but my stamina’s not as good since the heat and the hospital.

The alpha lunges, slamming me to the dirt.

I slap the ground and roll before he can grab me, tapping into years of self-preservation practice to jump up and stumble away.

“You’re ours,” he rumbles, low and nauseating. “Submit.”

The bark sends me staggering, and that’s the utter bullshit of being an awakened omega.

Any alpha’s word is law.

The guy’s wrist hooks my shoulder, wrenching me around. My muscles lock, not cooperating, but the idiot just gave me all the momentum I need.

He doesn’t see the knife.

I twist my wrist and let his yank smash our bodies together.

My blade slips into his belly.

He chokes.

He falls.
