I run.

“Stop!” Artur roars, and his fucking pack leader bark knocks me again. It takes everything I have to throw it off, including seconds I don’t have.

Two Brauns bookend me, each grabbing an arm.

“Submit!” A rubber-smelling motherfucker barks in my ear, and my body shuts down.

I go limp.

“Get her to the car,” Artur grits. “Someone grab Tommy.”

No. No car.

I feel like I’m replaying my nightmares. But I survived that time.

I’ll survive this one too.

I bite my cheek until copper and pain shake away the alpha command. Then I land a dancer’s heel-kick in the guy’s balls.

He howls and drops my arm.

“Bitch!” The second guy snags me in a bear hug, and all I can do is thrash, kicking at his knees while he smashes my waist to his sweaty chest.

“Have it your way.” He crushes my ribs, choking me out. It hurts so bad I’m afraid the bones’ll crack. I go limp again, only this time with a better plan.

Hold my breath.

Let him think I’m unconscious.

I thrash a few more seconds, then play possum, praying he can’t feel the drumbeat of my heart.

He lifts me into his arms, treating me to a face full of rubber and stale cigarettes. I fight to not react to the scent, peeking through my lashes and waiting for the right moment to bail.

“Shit. Omega.” He inhales me so hard his stubble beard-burns my throat.

Screw playing possum.

I’m about to blind him dead with my fingernails.

Then a voice pierces the night, clear and sharp as raw crystal. “Lilah!”

Orion’s golden curls catch the moonlight, and he brings me back to life.

His face is flushed with anger. With terror.

All the emotions swirl through his night-blue eyes as he runs down the alpha who’s trying to spirit me away.

Am I hallucinating?

Can’t be.

I was ready for the escape plan where I slathered myself in pond mud and breathed through a bamboo straw like a cartoon mouse. I was even ready for the worst-case plan—the one where I take myself out to stop myself from being taken.

I’d put my money on an airplane-toilet meteor crushing the Brauns’ skulls before I ever made a plan that relied on a rescue.

It doesn’t happen.

It’s never happened.
