Thank God it was a good-sized bath towel. A hand towel wasn’t going to hold her boobs in place. She got it wrapped around her chest and found a washcloth. Leaning down, she placed the folded cloth on the bleeding spot above Williams’s eyebrow.

His eyes slowly opened. “Rodriguez?”

“Captain.” She held up her free hand. “How many fingers?”

“What?”

“How many fingers am I holding up?”

“Three,” he counted correctly. “What happened?”

“Do you know what day it is and where you are?”

“Sunday at Noah Baker’s house. Why am I lying on the floor in a bathroom, and why are you naked?”

“I was showering off flour when you forgot your manners about knocking.”

He sat up. “I did knock. No one answered.”

She wagged her hand at him. “Duh. The shower was on.”

His eyes suddenly crossed, and he croaked, “Towel.”

“Shit.” She snatched both of her hands back to her chest to recapture the towel before she exposed her entire bosom to him.

This meant she let go of the washcloth, and she bent forward to catch it.

Thus revealing more boobs.

“I have it.” Williams shoved her hand away in his haste to reach it first.

“Excuse me. Next time, I’ll leave you concussed and bleeding on the floor.”

“I don’t have a concussion. I’m fine.” He stood up, demonstrating rock solid balance.

Fabulous. Now she could stare at his magnificent chest, which she had personally sprayed down with water. The Bedpost Queen, aka The Queen of Spades, stared back at her from the left side of his chest. Its Mona Lisa expression aware of which direction Luna’s thoughts were leading.

“You’re welcome.” She stood up too, making sure her bits and pieces remained covered.

“I’m sorry.” He blew out a slow stream of air. “This isn’t going down in the books as one of my better barbecues.”

She snickered. “Oh, trust me, we’ve had way worse parties than this. A little shouting match, shoving, getting sprayed down by a hose. You’ve been with us for almost a year. Did you expect more?”

He carefully removed the washcloth from his forehead and inspected his abrasion in the mirror. “Damn it. The team’s gonna tell everyone the Fire Chief gave me this.”

“You could tell them truth. My tits did it.”

He reddened as he turned back to her and denied hotly, “It’s a blank spot. I saw nothing.”

“A blank spot would be nice. I could use it for this whole past damn year.” Her eyes welled up with tears. “Shit. I don’t really mean that.”

“It’s okay if you do. Sometimes I wish the same.”

She rubbed her eyes with her forearm. “If it went blank, I’d have lost my uncle twice. Missed the good parts, too.”

“You also wouldn’t have destroyed every rig in Firehouse 15.”

“One of them was your fault.” She exhaled slowly, the way her grief counselor had recommended. “Don’t worry. I’m good.”
